Mtambo optimistic of MCP-UTM victory

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Citizens for Transformation (CFT) leader Timothy Mtambo has said, what come may,  the MCP-UTM alliance will win the July 2 election saying Malawians are tired of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leadership.

Speaking to journalist at Mount Soche Hotel, where presidential hopefuls are presenting their nomination papers, Mtambo said he resigned from the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) in order to complement efforts by Malawi Congress Party and UTM to oust President Peter Mutharika from the presidency.

“I left my job because I wanted the freedom to help our people. So I am jobless because I want to be part and parcel of the people that can help our country at a different space.  So right now the solution is to kick out DPP, and I want to be part and parcel of the people who can properly guide our youth, our people to say not this, we need to take this path.

“I don’t have any expectations in terms of personal benefits. My expectations are for a better Malawi, a better Malawi for all. So I have a lot of expectations in this alliance because I see leaders who are going to liberate our country,” Mtambo said.

Asked on his next move if MCP-UTM alliance fails again in the forthcoming election, Mtambo categorically dispelled prospects of DPP getting another mandate to govern the country saying the party has failed Malawians.

“They (MCP-UTM alliance) are not going to lose because I know they are the people’s choice. DPP has failed Malawians and there is no way Malawians can vote for DPP. Actually they failed. Even in the previous election DPP lost that’s why elections were nullified so they are going to lose once again. And if they want to rig we are going to face them on the ground.

“Thats why we are saying these commissioners in front have no credibility and these people we are going to fight them until the last day. We are here just because we want to comply but these commissioners we believe they have no regard for this country, they have no integrity and the court confirmed, the parliament did the same and the people of this country did the same,” he said.

Mtambo was the chairperson of HRDC but he later resigned after announcing his resolve to join frontline politics.

He is currently moving around drumming support for MCP-UTM alliance, whose candidate is Lazarus Chakwera.

Ironically, Mtambo had been accused of working for the Malawi Congress Party when he was holding violent demonstrations across the country under HRDC banner.
