Mukhitho released on bail, Malawi police tightlipped on details

Former Malawi’s State House chief of Staff Mukhitho released on bail

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Former Chief of Staff of State Residences, Peter Mukhito, who was arrested yesterday in connection with the importation of cement worth billions of kwacha using former President Peter Mutharika’s Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN) has been granted police bail.

National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera has confirmed the development but could not divulge more details.

Documents show that the former Inspector General Mukhito was at the heart of the procurement of cement and was the one signing documents to the Malawi Revenue Authority applying for the tax exemption on behalf of Mutharika. 

Police had earlier questioned former MRA deputy commissioner Rosa Mbilizi in connection to the matter.

The law enforcement agents also arrested businessman Mahmed Chunara who imported the cement and former presidential security aide Norman Chisale.

Chunara and Chisale were released on bail pending commencement of their cases.

A good number of the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have been arrested since the Tonse Alliance under the leadership of Lazarus Chakwera and Saulos Chilima took over government.

On Monday, Police arrested Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority  (MERA) Chief Executive Officer Dr Collins Magalasi and spokesperson Patrick Maulidi. 

Magalasi is believed to have misprocured a van which cost MERA an amount of K563,200,000 through cheque number 26180 and another cheque of of K140, 800,000.00 bringing the total amount to K704,000,000. 00
