Mutharika urges national unity and peace in Eid al-Adha message

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Peter Mutharika has used the occasion of Eid al-Adha to call on Malawians to prioritize unity, peace, and mutual respect as the Muslim community marks one of Islam’s most significant holidays.

The President’s appeal came at a time when the country joins millions of Muslims worldwide in commemorating the spiritual themes of devotion, sacrifice, and compassion that define the festival.

In an official statement released to mark the celebrations, Mutharika extended his goodwill to the Muslim community across Malawi, wishing them peaceful and reflective observances.

He emphasized that the values embodied by Eid al-Adha—obedience to God, willingness to sacrifice for the greater good, and charity toward those in need—offer important lessons for the entire nation.

The President noted that such principles transcend religious boundaries and serve as a foundation for national cohesion and social harmony.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s profound faith and his readiness to sacrifice his son Ismail in obedience to God’s command.

According to Islamic tradition, God intervened at the last moment and provided a ram to be sacrificed instead, affirming Ibrahim’s devotion and establishing the ritual of animal sacrifice that remains central to the holiday.

Across Malawi, Muslim families marked the day with early morning prayers, the ritual slaughter of livestock, and the distribution of meat to family, neighbors, and the less fortunate.

The President’s message aligned with these acts of giving, framing them as expressions of solidarity that strengthen the social fabric of the nation.

Mutharika urged citizens of all faiths to draw inspiration from the spirit of Eid al-Adha by fostering understanding and extending support to one another.

He reiterated that Malawi’s progress depends on the ability of its people to live together in peace, respect diversity, and work collectively toward shared goals.

The call for unity comes against the backdrop of Malawi’s broader efforts to promote social cohesion and national dialogue in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious society.

By linking the religious significance of Eid al-Adha to national values, the President sought to reinforce a message of inclusion and shared responsibility.

As celebrations continued throughout the country, the President’s remarks served as a reminder that moments of religious observance can also become moments of national reflection.
