Mutharika visits Chikwawa flood victims

Chikhwawa, January 22, 2015: President Professor Peter Mutharika on Wednesday visited some of the people that were affected by recent flooding at Tizola Camp in Chikwawa district.

Speaking at the camp where people from the areas of village headmen Tizola, Nyakayekha and Thedzi are being kept, the President described the flooding as a new phenomenon for the country.

In Chikwawa there are 7,987 households from the areas of traditional authorities Lundu, Ngabu, Makhuwira, Mlilima, Maseya, Kasisi, Katunga and Ngowe who have been left homeless by the floods.

Mutharika assured the families that Government is working hard to ensure that the plight of the affected people is alleviated by making sure that there is enough provision of basic necessities in all the camps.

On that note, the President expressed gratitude to all the Malawians who have responded to the floods by providing necessities to people who have been affected.

“I am not discounting efforts being done by various organizations and companies. But since the floods took place Malawians from all walks of life have come forth and rendered different kinds of support, and this is commendable as we have shown that as a country we can deal with our own problems,” acknowledged the President.

The President then took time to thank various organizations and companies that are assisting with various provisions for people in camps and even those living outside the camps.

He then added that a group of personnel was making assessments to determine the actual impact of the flooding and that he would address the nation on the same over the weekend.

Before visiting Tizola, the President also visited Sekeni and Konzere camps in the district.
