Mwanza border post accident claims two lives

MWANZA (Maravi Post)–Two people have died this morning following a fatal road accident which occurred at the border district of Mwanza after the driver lost control of the vehicle which was over speeding.

Mwanza Police Station Public Relations Officer, Edwin Kaunda confirmed to Maravi Post on Wednesday about the death of a driver of motor vehicle LA 3395 and one passenger who was in the vehicle reg number NU 1204.

Kaunda said that the accident happened around 09:00am and the two died while receiving treatment at Mwanza hospital hospita. The identities of the victims are yet to be established.

“A truck Reg Number BL 8023 belonging to ZAGAF Transport   being driven by Peter Hora was coming from Mozambique. As  he was descending Kanyani Escapment, he lost control of the motor vehicle due to over speeding and in the process, he hit MRA check point barrier  which swung and hit  Monorurama bus which  was about to leave the border to South Africa,” said Kaunda.

According to Kaunda, the truck further hit two motor vehicles. The first vehicle hit was LA 3395 Toyota corolla which was heading the opposite direction with 4 passengers on board and  the truck swerved into a stationery vehicle MJ 3904 and NU 1204 Toyota PROBOX which was heading the same direction with three passengers on board.

“Due to impact, 10 people sustained serious injuries and they were taken to Mwanza District Hospital for treatment. The driver of motor vehicle LA 3395 and one passenger who was in the vehicle reg number NU 1204 died while receiving treatment at the said hospital,” he said.

The other victims are still in hospital. The driver of the truck Peter Hora is in police custody for further  questioning.
