MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Workers at Mzuzu City Council have gone on strike, closed access to their offices demanding improved conditions of service.
The striking workers are calling for 10 percent salary increment, normalization of their pensions, answers regarding the whereabouts of the official mayoral vehicle and immediate firing of the Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Gomezgani Nyasulu.
According to Mzuzu City Council Workers Union’s secretary General, Typen Kamanga, the strike has resulted in the closure of all Council offices, sparking concerns that fee collection in the city’s markets may be disrupted.
However, Mzuzu City Council’s public relations officer, Mcdonald Gondwe says contingency measures will be provided having concluded the management meeting.
“The Council is currently working on the sustainable contribution to NICO which calls for contingency measures after the management meeting,” said Gondwe.
On the official mayoral vehicle Gondwe refused to comment.
Mzuzu City has about 300 workers, meaning that the action highlights the ongoing challenges faced by local government employees in Malawi.
