MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-The Grand Palace Hotel management Mzuzu is suspected to have swindled public fund obtained through Malawi Electrol Commission (MEC) contract in a tricky way.
According to some MEC workers recruited last year to help the institution to run the 2025 elections who spoke to this publication in a condition of anonymity.
“This is what they were doing. On the day of our arrival we signed forms indicating that we are going to sleep at Gllrand Palace Motel where their room fees are 200 thousand kwacha and above.
“Ironically we were sent to sleep in some low standards guesthouses where their room fees are below 30 thousand kwacha,” some MEC workers said.
According to them, in the morning they were taken back to Grand Palace Motel where they also signed forms as if they slept there.
“If you can go to access these forms, you will think we were sleeping at Grand Palace while not. Was this not part of stealing public fund?,” they wondered.
According to this allegations, Grand Palace was pocketing not less than 150 thousand kwacha per person a day.
MEC Public Relations Officer, Sangwani Mwafulirwa admitted that his institution have a contract with Gland Palace but was not aware how the Mzuzu based motel used the fund.
“As MEC, our contract is with Grand Palace and we disbursed the funds to Gland Palace,” he explained.
When contacted, Grand Palace Exective Director Sam Chamanza denied to respond to some of our raised questions.
“If you want come to the office for discussion, I can’t tell you anything on phone” he said.
Meanwhile some Civil Society Organisations have vowed to take an action against Grand Palace.
