A new project aimed at transforming the paid childcare sector in Malawi was launched recently in Lilongwe.
The Action for Paid Childcare Sector Transformation Project is a collaborative effort between World University Services of Canada and the Women’s Legal Resources Centre (Wolrec).
The project seeks to enhance the economic empowerment of female childcare providers and strengthen their voice and representation in the sector.
Speaking at the launch, Maggie Kathewera Banda, Executive Director of Wolrec, emphasized the importance of a sustainable paid childcare sector.
“A sustainable paid childcare sector is key to quality support,” she said, adding that, “When women are empowered through paid and decent childcare work, it not only benefits them economically, but also strengthens the entire social fabric, allowing them to contribute to development.”
The project is timely, given the challenges faced by childcare providers in Malawi. The sector has remained underpaid and undervalued, with many providers struggling to make ends meet.
Halima Daudi, Deputy Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, acknowledged the need for new collective commitment to improve childcare services. “There is a need for a new collective commitment to improve childcare services,” she said.
The project will implement several interventions to achieve its objectives.
These include organizing childcare workers, supporting government efforts to reform childcare policies, and helping training institutions to professionalize and improve service delivery in the sector.
By empowering female childcare providers, the project aims to improve the quality of childcare services and promote economic development.
The project is being implemented in Malawi and Kenya with funding from Global Affairs Canada.
