The NGO-Gender Coordination Network (NGO-GCN) has urged Nkhata Bay-based journalists to promote fair and balanced reporting towards women aspirants in the run-up to the forthcoming General Elections.

Speaking in an interview on the sidelines of an interface with Nkhata Bay-based journalists, Dorothy Chiumia from NGO-GCN emphasized the crucial role journalists play in supporting aspiring women to showcase their ideas to the public.

According to Chiumia, fair and balanced reporting is essential in promoting gender equality and increasing the representation of women in political positions.

“Journalists have a critical role to play in shaping public opinion and perceptions about women aspirants,” Chiumia said, adding that,”By promoting fair and balanced reporting, journalists can help to create a level playing field for women aspirants and increase their chances of success.”

The interface meeting was attended by Nkhata Bay-based journalists, who interacted with NGO-GCN representatives on how to promote fair and balanced reporting on women aspirants.

District Information Officer for Nkhata Bay, Chisomo Kambandanga, described the training as timely, with the potential to increase the number of women in political positions in the district.

“The training is crucial in promoting gender equality and increasing the representation of women in decision-making positions,” Kambandanga said, adding that, “As journalists, we have a responsibility to promote fair and balanced reporting, and this training has equipped us with the necessary skills to do so.”

The meeting was made possible with support from UN Women through the Malawi Electoral Support Project under the Basket Fund financed by the EU, FCDO, Government of UK, Irish Embassy, and the Royal Norwegian Embassy.

The project aims to promote gender equality and increase the participation of women in the electoral process.
