Communities in the area of Senior Chief Fukamapiri and Mankhambira in Nkhata Bay District have expressed gratitude to the government for fulfilling its promise of distributing maize to targeted households affected by hunger in the 2024/2025 lean season.

The maize distribution exercise, which is being implemented by the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), has brought relief to thousands of households in the district who were struggling to access food due to the lean season.

In an interview on Sunday at Kande Trading Centre after a maize distribution exercise, one of the beneficiaries, Letesi Banda from Chibunya Village, Senior Chief Fukamapiri, said she is truly grateful for what the Malawi Government has done.

“We were told we will receive bags of maize in the months of December 2024 and February 2025 and cash in the month of January 2025, covering the lean season to cushion us from food insecurity. That has been fulfilled today, and we are truly grateful,” Banda said.

Another beneficiary, Annie Longwe, 63, from Chivuta Village, said that the maize distributed has helped to keep children at school.

“We are grateful for the government’s initiative. The maize has helped us to feed our children and keep them in school,” Longwe said.

The maize distribution exercise is part of the government’s response to the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) report, which established that about 5.7 million Malawians will be in dire need of food aid during the 2024/2025 lean period.

The report highlighted the need for urgent intervention to support vulnerable households affected by food insecurity.

Disaster Risk Management Officer for Nkhata Bay District, Rachael Kamanga, said that the maize distribution to the 10,494 beneficiaries in the district under this final phase is expected to be completed at the end of the month.

“We are working hard to ensure that all beneficiaries receive their maize allocation. We are grateful for the government’s support and commitment to addressing food insecurity in our district,” Kamanga said.
