Nsanje district in Malawi needs a 3 year plan to fully recover from Flood damage

Nsanje, February 03: District Commissioner for Nsanje, Harry Phiri, has appealed to government and non-governmental organizations to devise a 3-year recovery plan for Nsanje district and its people to fully recover from the current flood crisis.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Saturday, Harry Phiri noted that many sectors of development had been affected by the floods, hence the need for a long term recovery program to rebuild the district.

He cited the East bank where the roads had become impassable and a lot of infrastructure had been damaged.

He explained that property, crops and livestock that formed the source of income were also washed away by the floods.

Additionally, Phiri observed that over 10,000 displaced families had nothing to rely on apart from government and non-governmental organizations until they get back on their feet.

He thus stressed the need for a plan that would address all problems from agriculture, health, infrastructure, telecommunications and the economy.

As part of the recovery plan, Harry Phiri suggested that government should permanently relocate people living in disaster prone areas in the district.
