A storm is brewing within the corridors of State House, where troubling reports suggest that President Lazarus Chakwera’s campaign strategy is being undermined from within.
At the center of the controversy is the State House protocol team, which has allegedly been recycling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) youths and presenting them as key community stakeholders such as teachers and traditional leaders.
These handpicked youths are ushered in to meet the President under the guise of genuine dialogue, only to be paid 50,000 Kwacha each for their attendance.
However, the scandal deepens as it’s revealed that 20,000 Kwacha is reportedly returned by each youth to the protocol team, who then allegedly share the money among themselves.
This shocking revelation has prompted public outrage, with many seeing it as a form of “mini-cashgate” right under the President’s nose — or worse, with his knowledge.
The alleged deception not only undermines the integrity of Chakwera’s outreach efforts but also raises serious questions about internal accountability and the abuse of taxpayer resources.
According to government insiders, the President has already spent over 10 billion Kwacha from the public coffers in a desperate attempt to bolster MCP’s standing ahead of the September 2025 elections.
What was meant to be a focused and strategic indoor campaign is now mired in corruption and manipulation, potentially alienating the very electorate it seeks to engage.
Economic experts and civil society actors have been quick to criticise this misuse of funds, especially at a time when Malawi is grappling with severe fuel shortages and sugar scarcity.
The optics of lavish spending on a politicised campaign, while ordinary citizens queue for basic commodities, could not come at a worse time for Chakwera’s administration.
