President Lazarus Chakwera’s Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is busy holding political rallies amid failed economy just three years in power without nothing tangible to show.
This has prompted journalist Nassah to rebuke the party while is failing to align itself with Tonse Alliance campaign promises made in 2020.
Nassah writes:
You look at the enormous time and resources being put into these so-called ”development rallies” by Comrades and you realize that we may have promoted a teacher to become a headmaster when, in fact, this person functions best as a teacher and not as head of a school.
It seems the Comrades miss the adrenaline rush of yesteryear when they could run around the country leading protest rallies and promising the people all manner of goodies.
The teacher is finding the job of effectively administering a school a tad too demanding and perhaps beyond their level of competence.
Should Comrades stop campaigning and holding the so-called “development rallies”? Of course, no; each to their own.
But ruling parties must know that the best campaigning is done through four to five years of service delivery to the people and making good what they promised they would do. Those in power should campaign for another term by simply pointing to a litany of deliverables. As we went into the 2009 election, Bingu coined it aptly; “let the work of my hands speak for me…”
When you see a ruling party fixated on rallies as if it were some opposition outfit desperate for support, it is an indication that the ruling party is suffering from the hangover of being in the opposition when rallies and demonstrations and protests were the only currency available.
By the way, what, exactly, is a “development rally?”
