BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Speaker of Parliament, Catherine Gotani Hara, has come under fire for her handling of the leadership of the opposition in the legislature.

Her actions have raised serious concerns about her competence and adherence to parliamentary standing orders.

It is clear that she has failed in her duty to uphold the rules and regulations that govern the functioning of parliament, and as such, there is a strong case for her impeachment.

The issue at hand revolves around the leadership of the opposition in parliament.

According to Malawi’s parliamentary standing orders, the leader of the opposition should come from the party with the largest number of MPs.

In this case, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) had elected George Chaponda as the leader of the opposition, replacing Kondwani Nankhumwa.

However, Nankhumwa had obtained a court injunction restraining the DPP from electing Chaponda and removing him from the position.

Despite this injunction, the DPP went ahead with their decision and submitted Chaponda’s name to Speaker Gotani Hara.

She initially acknowledged receipt of Chaponda’s name and congratulated him, even inviting him to a business committee meeting.

However, she later backtracked and barred Chaponda from participating in the meeting, citing the injunction obtained by Nankhumwa as the reason for her change of heart.

This sudden reversal of decision by Speaker Gotani Hara demonstrates a clear case of incompetence and lack of proper understanding of parliamentary procedures.

Her actions have not only caused confusion and disruption within the legislature but have also undermined the integrity of the opposition leadership.

By allowing herself to be swayed by external factors such as court injunctions, she has failed in her duty to uphold the standing orders that guide parliamentary proceedings.

Furthermore, Speaker Gotani Hara’s refusal to recognize the newly elected leader of the opposition, Mary Navitcha, further highlights her incompetence and breach of parliamentary standing orders.

Despite the fact that Navitcha was duly elected by the DPP to serve as the leader of the opposition, Speaker Gotani Hara has refused to acknowledge her, citing the injunction obtained by Nankhumwa as the reason for her inaction.

This is a clear dereliction of duty on the part of the Speaker, as she is duty-bound to uphold the decisions made by the parliament, regardless of external legal challenges.

In light of these actions, it is clear that Speaker Gotani Hara has failed to live up to the expectations placed upon her as the head of the parliamentary institution.

Her incompetence and deliberate breach of standing orders have led to chaos and uncertainty within the legislature, and as a result, she cannot be trusted to fulfill her duties in a fair and impartial manner.

Therefore, there is a strong case for her impeachment in order to restore order and accountability within the Malawian parliament.

In conclusion, the actions of Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara have demonstrated a clear case of incompetence and breach of parliamentary standing orders.

Her failure to uphold the rules and regulations that govern the functioning of the parliament has led to confusion and disruption within the legislature.

Therefore, there is a strong argument for her impeachment in order to restore order and integrity to the Malawian parliament.
