BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The opposition Leader in Malawi Parliament George Chaponda has rebuked President Lazarus Chakwera’s continued petty trips which are siphoning hard-earned taxes.

In a press release issued on Friday, May 31, 2024, Chaponda has urged Chakwera to reassess his priorities and focus on critical issues affecting the nation, while also considering reducing unnecessary spending in order to conserve scarce resources.

The message from the Leader of Opposition comes at a crucial time when Malawi is facing economic challenges that require responsible spending and efficient use of public funds.

The press release highlights the need for the president to prioritize essential services over unnecessary expenditures, such as excessive internal travel for government officials to attend trivial events.

While some engagements may be important, the Leader of Opposition points out that many seem to be more focused on photo opportunities and publicity stunts rather than addressing the pressing issues affecting the nation.

Issues such as hunger, economic stagnation, rising unemployment, healthcare crisis, and passport challenges are among the challenges that Malawi is currently grappling with.

In the press release, the Leader of Opposition calls on President Chakwera to reduce his travel schedule, limit attendance in non-essential events and ceremonies, and prioritize the welfare and well-being of the citizens over photo opportunities and publicity stunts.

By doing so, the president can set a positive example of fiscal prudence and fulfill the promises he made while in opposition and upon ascending to power.

It is emphasized that the collective responsibility of managing public resources wisely and in the best interest of the people lies with all leaders, including the president.

The Leader of Opposition urges President Chakwera to dedicate his time and energy to finding solutions to the more pressing challenges facing the nation, rather than getting distracted by unnecessary expenditures.

The press release serves as a reminder to President Chakwera to stay true to his commitment of responsible governance and ethical leadership.

By prioritizing critical issues over unnecessary spending, the president can demonstrate his dedication to serving the people of Malawi and ensure that public resources are used efficiently for the betterment of the nation.
