Nigerian airstrike sparks controversy over civilian casualties

ABUJA-(MaraviPost)-The Nigerian military has declared an attack on a market in the remote village of Jilli a successful strike on a known terrorist enclave.

The airstrike, carried out by the Nigerian Air Force, was part of efforts to combat Boko Haram militants in the region.

Eyewitnesses describe a different scene, saying more than 100 people killed were traders and other members of the community, including women and children.

The strike occurred on April 11, 2026, at the Jilli market, located on the border of Borno and Yobe states, an area known to be a hotspot for Islamist militants.

The Nigerian Air Force has launched an investigation into the incident, with Defence Minister General Christopher Musa insisting that those killed were not innocent civilians but individuals actively supporting insurgents. “There was no innocent person there.

Anybody in that location knew what they were doing,” Musa said.

The airstrike has sparked outrage and scrutiny, with rights groups and residents demanding accountability.

Amnesty International condemned the strike, saying it was an unlawful use of deadly force and showed the Nigerian military’s disregard for civilian lives.

The Nigerian government has expressed regret for civilian casualties but maintains that the operation was intelligence-led and targeted terrorists.

The incident highlights the challenges facing Nigeria’s military in its counterinsurgency operations, where civilian areas are often located near suspected militant strongholds.

Mutharika hails Old Mutual’s planned investments in tourism, infrastructure

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-President Peter Mutharika has commended Old Mutual Malawi for its commitment to investing in key sectors, including road infrastructure and tourism.

Speaking at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre on Wednesday following a meeting with an Old Mutual delegation led by Group Chief Executive Officer Tavona Biza, President Mutharika said the discussions focused on policy frameworks and the strategic direction of the partnership between government and the financial services group.

The President emphasised the importance of the private sector’s role in national development, describing their involvement as “commendable.”

He said strong collaboration between government and private players is essential to accelerate growth and deliver services that improve the lives of Malawians.

President Mutharika reaffirmed that his administration is open to Public-Private Partnerships and encouraged other investors to explore opportunities in Malawi.

He cited the conducive environment his government has established to ensure mutual benefits for both investors and the country.

“Government alone cannot do everything. We need partners who are willing to invest in productive sectors that create jobs and build our economy. Old Mutual’s decision to invest is a vote of confidence in Malawi,” Mutharika said.

In response, Old Mutual Group CEO Tavona Biza confirmed that the financial giant is prepared to begin its investments in the tourism and infrastructure sectors. He said Old Mutual sees long-term value in Malawi and is ready to align its investment strategy with national development priorities.

Biza noted that the company is particularly interested in infrastructure projects that unlock economic potential, including road networks that support trade and tourism facilities that can boost foreign exchange earnings.

The meeting at Sanjika Palace forms part of ongoing engagements between the President and private sector leaders aimed at mobilising investment and strengthening economic partnerships.

President Mutharika said his government will continue to streamline policies and improve the ease of doing business to attract more capital into critical sectors.

He called on local and international investors to take advantage of the opportunities available.

Old Mutual is one of the largest financial services groups operating in Malawi, with interests in insurance, investment, and banking. Its move into infrastructure and tourism signals a broadening of its portfolio in the country.

Malawi Court dismisses domestic workers plea for pension inclusion

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Constitutional Court sitting as a division of the High Court in Blantyre on Thursday dismissed a case challenging the exclusion of domestic workers from Malawi’s mandatory pension scheme, ruling that the decision by the Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamveka was constitutional.

In a judgment delivered by Justices Jack N’riva, Chimwemwe Kamowa, and Allan Muhome, the court held that provisions under the Employment Act and the Pension Act do not infringe on constitutional rights.

The judges found that the exemption is justified due to the informal nature of domestic work, citing factors such as administrative feasibility, financial constraints, compliance challenges, and the need for gradual implementation of pension reforms.

The court further ruled that Mwanamveka acted within legal powers in exempting domestic workers under the Pension Act, agreeing with submissions made by Chrispine Kalusa from the Attorney General’s Chambers.

It also determined that the Domestic and Vulnerable Workers Association (DOVWA) lacked sufficient legal standing to institute the case.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of domestic workers led by Eliza Steven, had argued that their exclusion from the scheme denied them access to pensions, formal employment contracts, and broader social protection.

However, the court dismissed claims of discrimination and ordered each party to bear its own costs.

EFF leader Julius Malema escapes prison, appeal keeps him out for now

PRETORIA-(MaraviPost)-Economic Freedom Fighters President Julius Malema has escaped prison after he was sentenced to a cumulative prison term after Judge Twanet Olivier handed down punishment on three counts in court on Thursday.

In her ruling, Judge Olivier sentenced Malema to five years imprisonment on count one, two years imprisonment on count two, and on count three a fine of R20,000 or six months imprisonment in default of payment.

The sentences follow a trial whose details were not immediately made public in the court’s sentencing remarks.

The charges and factual background of each count were not elaborated during the brief delivery of the sentence.

Malema’s legal team moved swiftly after the sentence was pronounced.

His lawyers launched an appeal before he could be taken into custody.

Under South African criminal procedure, the noting of an appeal against a conviction and sentence generally suspends the execution of the sentence pending the outcome of the appeal, unless the court directs otherwise.

As a result, the EFF leader will remain out of prison for now until the appeal is heard and determined by a higher court.

The court did not set bail conditions in the sentencing sitting because the appeal was noted immediately, effectively staying the custodial sentences.

There was a heavy security presence outside court as EFF supporters gathered to hear the outcome.

Party officials urged calm after the sentence and said the legal team was confident in the grounds of appeal.

“The appeal process is part of the law and we will pursue it to the fullest. The President of the EFF will continue with his duties while the legal process runs its course,” an EFF spokesperson said outside court.

The National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the sentence but noted that the appeal was expected.

“The court has spoken on the evidence before it. We will respond to the appeal in due course,” a prosecution representative said.

Legal analysts say the appeal could take several months depending on the court roll and the preparation of the record.

The appellate court will review whether the trial court misdirected itself on conviction, on sentence, or both.

Until that process concludes, the sentences of five years and two years imprisonment will not be executed, and the R20,000 fine or six months alternative on count three is likewise stayed.

Malema did not address the media after the proceedings. He left court with his legal team and senior EFF leaders.

The ruling marks the most serious legal setback for the EFF leader since the party was formed in 2013.

The EFF has built its brand on militant opposition to corruption and what it terms economic exclusion, with Malema as its most visible figure.

Political reaction began filtering in minutes after the sentence.

Opposition parties called for respect for the courts while the ANC said the law must be allowed to take its course.

Civil society groups stressed that the appeal process is a constitutional right and should be respected by all sides.

The High Court will now transmit the record to the appellate division.

A date for the hearing of the appeal has not yet been set.

Until then, Julius Malema remains free, the EFF’s parliamentary and political programme continues, and the legal battle over the three counts moves to the next stage.

Masters FC impress in Pre-season victory

….Masters 4-0 Zitha

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Newly promoted FDH Premiership side Masters Football Club continued their preseason preparations in style with a commanding 4-0 victory over NBS Bank National Division League outfit Namitete Zitha at Bingu National Stadium on Wednesday morning.

Masters showcased their attacking strength and defensive discipline throughout the match, dominating proceedings against their lower-league opponents.

The emphatic win adds to growing optimism among supporters as the team gears up for life in the top flight.

Despite the convincing result, Head Coach Peter Mponda was quick to downplay the significance of the scoreline, stressing that the technical panel remains focused on performance rather than outcomes at this stage of preparation.

“The result should not be a litmus test for the team,” said Mponda. “As a technical panel, we cannot afford to be overly satisfied. Our main focus is to continue assessing the team’s aggression in attack, scoring efficiency, and overall defensive organization.”

Mponda emphasized that preseason matches are primarily an opportunity to evaluate player readiness, tactical execution, and areas requiring improvement ahead of the new season.

Masters FC will be looking to build on this performance as they continue their preseason schedule, with the ultimate goal of establishing themselves as a competitive side in the FDH Premiership.

The hosts made a blistering start, taking the lead as early as the 3rd minute through Patrick Phiri with a simple tap in from a close range after a well-delivered cross by Frank Sanudi.

The home team doubled their lead just five minutes later through Chikaiko Batison who produced a moment of individual brilliance.

The forward surged from deep inside the opposition half before calmly lifting the ball over the advancing Goalkeeper.

After the break, Masters maintained control and continued to pass forward. Mabuchi Msiska extended the lead in the 58th minute, finishing confidently after being set up by Stain Davie.

Masters completed the scoring in the 71st minute through Philimon Ndhlovu who capped off a neat team move with a composed finish inside the box.

Namitete Zitha FC head Coach Martin Mkamanga acknowledged the defeat attributing it to lack of match fitness since the team has just regrouped.

Masters has played twelve preseason games this far, registering six wins, five draws and two losses against Chitipa United FC and Karonga United FC.

Sintana Listing Signals New Era for Local Ownership in Namibia’s Oil and Gas Sector

The company is looking listing on Namibia’s national exchange with a view to explore options to provide and develop liquidity for local Namibian investors

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, April 16, 2026/ –&nbspCanadian-based oil and gas company Sintana Energy has announced its intention to list the company’s shares on the Namibian Securities Exchange, signaling a shift toward inclusive growth and early-stage local participation in one of Africa’s most promising frontier oil and gas markets. The move reflects the company’s overall strategy to explore options to provide and develop liquidity for local investors, ensuring Namibians are not merely spectators to the country’s hydrocarbon boom, but active participants in the value chain from the outset.
The African Energy Chamber (AEC) welcomes the listing as a strategic and forward-looking move that reflects the type of market-driven solutions needed to advance energy development across the continent. As Namibia moves toward first oil production by 2030, Sintana’s listing reinforces the importance of structuring the industry to deliver tangible benefits to citizens today. By enabling local ownership through public market access, Sintana is aligning national economic interests with upstream growth.

Sintana Energy has already started discussions with the Namibia Securities Exchange and has engaged IJG Securities Ltd. as its sponsor and corporate advisor. Spearheaded in part by Knowledge Katti, Director of Sintana and Chairman of Custos Energy, the move reflects a growing recognition that ownership and access must be broadened if the full economic potential of hydrocarbons is to be realized. Katti highlighted that Sintana’s listing is a reflection of a vision to see Namibians – particularly youth – become true participants in the emerging oil and gas sector. He described the listing as more than a financial opportunity; but as a chance for Namibians to diversify their futures, build generational wealth and hold a direct stake in the energy sector.

“Sintana’s listing is a powerful example of how Africa’s energy sector can be structured to deliver real, immediate benefits to its people. Namibia is showing that local ownership does not have to wait until production – it can and should begin at the exploration stage. This is the kind of leadership and innovation we need to see across the continent,” states NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman, AEC.

The listing comes as a pivotal time for both Sintana Energy and Namibia. With exposure to blocks in the Orange Basin, Sintana Energy is advancing several ambitious exploration initiatives alongside local and international partners. At PEL 83, the project partners – including TotalEnergies (operator), Galp Energia and Sintana – recently revised the 3C contingent resources upwards to 1.38 billion barrels of oil equivalent from 875 million barrels, marking a 57% increase and highlighting the potential of the Mopane complex. The partners are planning a three-well drilling program starting in H2, 2026, following TotalEnergies’ farm-in earlier this year. FID is planned for 2028, with first oil set for 2032.

Sintana Energy also holds a 7.4% indirect carried interest in PEL 87 – home to Blocks 2713A and 2713B, operated by Pancontinental Energy. In March 2026, the partners received government approval to extend the First Renewal Exploration Period by 12 months to January 22, 2027. During this period, the partners will undertake an Environmental Impact Assessment, reprocess 3D seismic data and interpretation and drill an exploration well. In the Walvis Basin, Sintana Energy signed a Letter of Intent for a period of exclusivity for an indirect interest in PEL 37 – currently owned and operated by Paragon Oil and Gas. Under the agreement, Sintana has until April 30, 2026 to undertake technical, commercial and legal due diligence on Paragon and PEL 37, with a view to potentially farm-into the asset.

Stepping into this picture, Sintana’s upcoming listing demonstrates a commitment to aligning its investment strategy with Namibia’s long-term economic ambitions. By prioritizing inclusion, transparency and early participation, the company is not only advancing its upstream strategy, but setting a new standard for how companies engage local communities.

Echoes in the chamber- The return of Malawi’s most vocal political figureheads

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Some experienced politicians in Malawi are returning to parliament after years away, sparking interest across the country.

Today, two such figures Frank Mwenifumbo, president of the National Development Party (NDP), and Patricia Kaliati of UTM have re-emerged as some of the most vocal and influential voices in the National Assembly, reigniting debate on issues of national importance.

After losing their parliamentary seats in the landmark 2020 Malawi general election, both Mwenifumbo and Kaliati appeared, for a time, to have retreated from the frontlines of legislative politics.

Yet in Malawi as elsewhere politics is rarely a final chapter.

The 2025 Malawi general election marked a decisive turning point, ushering them back into Parliament with renewed energy and a sharpened sense of purpose.

For Mwenifumbo, reclaiming the Karonga Central seat was more than a political comeback it was a reaffirmation of his enduring bond with the electorate.

Since his return, he has quickly reasserted his presence in the chamber.

His recent contribution during parliamentary deliberations on the legacy of former president Bingu wa Mutharika stood out for its reflective tone and emphasis on the defining traits of Bingu’s leadership.

Mwenifumbo portrayed a presidency marked by distinct character and notable achievements, a perspective that stirred both admiration and debate across the political divide.

Meanwhile, Kaliati, now representing Mulanje Central, has once again embraced her reputation as one of Parliament’s most outspoken figures.

Renowned for her sharp rhetoric and firm stance on governance issues, she has been particularly vocal in discussions surrounding the inquiry into the late Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima.

Her contributions have kept the issue firmly in the national spotlight, underscoring her continued influence in shaping political discourse.

Their return signals more than individual political redemption it reflects a broader pattern of resilience among Malawi’s political elite.

While critics question the recycling of familiar faces, supporters point to the value of experience and institutional memory in addressing the country’s complex challenges.

As Parliament grapples with pressing issues from governance and accountability to national unity the renewed presence of Mwenifumbo and Kaliati serves as a reminder that in politics, comebacks can carry both weight and consequence.

Whether their resurgence will translate into lasting national impact remains to be seen.

For now, however, one thing is clear the chamber is once again alive with voices that refuse to fade into silence.

Beyond the widely anticipated political comebacks of Mwenifumbo and Kaliati, the stage has also seen the quiet but significant return of other seasoned figures, adding new layers to the unfolding narrative.

Among them is Khumbo Kachali, the former Vice President under the People’s Party (PP) and Member of Parliament for Mzimba South West, whose re-emergence signals a renewed determination to shape the country’s direction.

Alongside him stands Francis Katsaira, the Member of Parliament for Nsanje Central, equally stepping back into the spotlight with experience and resolve.

Their reappearance in the August House signals not just individual political resilience but a broader narrative of seasoned politicians reclaiming their space in Malawi’s ever-evolving parliamentary landscape.

Central bank throws down the gauntlet as Silver Strikers eye glory

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Reserve Bank of Malawi has issued a bold challenge to Silver Strikers—famously known as the Central Bankers—to rise above their past triumphs and deliver an even more dominant performance in the upcoming 2026/27 season.

The electrifying call was made on Wednesday evening at Silver Stadium during a vibrant and high-energy season and kit launch gala that set the tone for what promises to be a fiercely competitive campaign.

Speaking to the audience Executive Director of Corporate Services, Mercy Kumbatira, made it clear that expectations are higher than ever.

With unwavering confidence, she challenged the players to not only defend their legacy but to eclipse their 2025 championship record.

“This is not the time to relax,” Kumbatira declared. “We want more. We expect more. The resources are there, the support is there—now it is up to the team to deliver greatness.”

She underscored the Reserve Bank’s continued investment in the club, pointing to the acquisition of a new team bus as a symbol of the institution’s commitment to excellence and player motivation.

In response, Chairperson of the Silver Strikers Technical Sub-Committee, George Chiusiwa, struck a confident tone, promising fans a season filled with ambition, determination, and silverware.

“This season, we are not just competing—we are conquering,” Chiusiwa said. “We are ready to sweep the trophies and make our supporters proud. The backing from the Reserve Bank gives us every reason to believe.”

The night was further charged with excitement as key stakeholders stepped forward in a powerful show of support.

The Football Legends Association (FLA), Malawi Sports Council, Ekhaya FC’ Ricco Mpinganjira and the Super League of Malawi (SULOM) each made bold statements by purchasing the newly unveiled jersey at MK1 million.

In a surprising twist that captured the spirit of the game, fierce rivals Civil Service United FC also joined in, securing a jersey at MK500,000—a gesture that added intrigue and respect to the unfolding narrative.

As the lights dimmed on a spectacular evening, one message rang loud and clear: Silver Strikers are not just preparing for a season—they are gearing up for a statement.

Last season Silver Strikers FC won the FDH Bank Cup and Charity Shield.

While their ladies team were the Inaugural National Bank Women’s football league champions with their Striker, Deborah Henry finished as a top goal scorer.
