LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Parliamentary Committee on Social Welfare has challenged civil rights grouping to put measures to end early marriages in girls.

The call was made to People Serving Girls at Risk on the opening of 25 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) launch.

Chairperson of the committee Savel Kafwafwa urged the civil society to keep on advocating for ending early marriage to protect the girl child from maternal complications.

Kafwafwa said promoting girl child education is a key to good girl upbringing and the committee is also advocating on grassroots using development gathering in their constituencies.

He called upon all stakeholders to join hands to make sure that issues of early marriage are being eradicated.

He said the committee will continue to lobby for funds to fight child marriage.

On his part, Executive Director for People Serving Girls at Risk, Careb Ng’ombo said Malawi has over two million girls in early marriages.

Ng’ombo therefore commended the Ministry of Gender, Malawi Parliament, and other partners in putting resources and everything to fight child marriage in Malawi.

He highlighted that every child has the right to be protected from this harmful practice which has devastating consequences for individuals and for society.

“I wish to join those who are calling for deploying a multisectoral approach to end child marriage, as advocated by the SADC Model Law on Eradicating Child Marriage and Protecting Children Already in Marriage,” said Ng’ombo.
