Patrice Lumumba’s remains return to Congo

KINSHASA-(MaraviPost)-A single tooth, once taken as a gruesome trophy, has made its way back to the Democratic Republic of Congo, symbolizing a long-overdue reckoning with the country’s tumultuous past.

The tooth belongs to Patrice Lumumba, the first Prime Minister of independent Congo, who was assassinated in 1961.

Lumumba’s legacy had been brutally cut short during the Congo Crisis, a period of turmoil that followed the country’s independence from Belgium.

His vision for a unified, independent Congo was seen as a threat by Western powers and local rivals, leading to his eventual assassination.

The people who killed him tried to erase all evidence of their crime, cutting his body into pieces and dissolving it in acid to prevent any grave from becoming a symbol of resistance.

However, a Belgian police commissioner, Georard Soete, had taken a tooth as a macabre keepsake, unknowingly preserving a piece of history.

For more than 60 years, the tooth remained in Belgium, a silent testament to the dark history of colonialism and violence.

Finally, in 2022, Belgium officially returned the tooth to Lumumba’s family, acknowledging the country’s “moral responsibility” for the events that led to his death.

A handover ceremony was held in Brussels, attended by dignitaries and Lumumba’s family members, before the remains were taken back to Congo for national mourning and burial ceremonies.

The tooth is now kept in a mausoleum in Kinshasa, treated as an important national historical relic and a symbol of the country’s struggle for independence.

The return of Lumumba’s tooth is a significant moment in Congo’s journey towards healing and reconciliation.

As the country grapples with its complex past, Lumumba’s legacy continues to inspire generations to fight for justice and equality.
