Pope Francis’ condition remains critical in hospital

VATICAN-(MaraviPost)-The Holy See Press Office on Sunday morning, February 23, 2025 announced that Pope Francis spent a peaceful ninth night in the hospital, as he continues receiving treatment for double pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

On Saturday night, the Press Office provided an update on the Pope’s health, stating that his condition remains critical and that he is not yet out of danger.

Earlier that morning, Pope Francis experienced a prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis, requiring high-flow oxygen therapy.

Blood tests also indicated thrombocytopenia and anemia, necessitating blood transfusions.

Despite feeling more fatigued than the previous day, the Pope remained alert and spent the day sitting in an armchair. His prognosis remains uncertain.

During a press conference at Gemelli Hospital on Friday afternoon, Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the head of the medical team treating the Pope, and Dr. Luigi Carbone, the Vice-Director of the Vatican’s healthcare service, addressed journalists for approximately 40 minutes.

They indicated that Pope Francis is expected to remain hospitalized for at least another week.

While he is not currently in danger of death, they emphasized that he is not yet fully out of danger either.
