Power outrage ransacks Malawi over heavy floods

Mutharika must resign

No hope to easing blackouts i

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawians on Monday evening, January 24 to Tuesday are still in blackout following heavy floods that have affected power generation.

Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) Malawi Limited says had no choice but been forced to shut down machines at power stations due to floods.

Malawians on social media have expressed anger over the development accusing utility body EGENCO of not prepared enough for rainy season.

“You cant just shut down power supply like that without proper notice. This utility body take Malawians for granted. You mean if floods continues, we are also to be in dark? queries John Kambeta.

EGENCO has however released a statement saying the national blackout has been caused by floods at its power stations.

“We are experiencing flash floods in the power stations. As such we have been forced to shutdown some machines to protect the intake structures from damage,” the company has said in a statement.

The company has apologised to customers and has promised to update Malawians on the issue.

Heavy rains have been reported today in various parts of the country, and in the Southern Region where EGENCO has power stations, floods have been reported.

The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services has since warned of more heavy rains as Moderate Tropical Storm ANA will likely enter Malawi Tuesday, January 25, 2022 through Zomba, Mulanje and Phalombe districts.

Malawi had late growing season as rains started pouring first week of 2022 January.
