President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has officially commissioned the long-awaited Beira-Malawi Railway line, a vital transport project completed by China Railways (CR20). The ceremony, held in Marka, Nsanje, was a vibrant and historic occasion, attended by a large crowd eager to witness this milestone in Malawi’s infrastructure development.
In his address, President Chakwera expressed his delight with the successful completion of the railway, emphasizing the far-reaching benefits it will have on Malawi’s social, economic, and political landscape. He noted that the new railway line will bolster trade, enhance connectivity, and reduce transportation costs, thus benefiting both businesses and citizens alike.
“This railway is not just a track connecting two countries—it is a bridge to new opportunities for Malawi,” the President said. “It will unlock the potential for economic growth, create jobs, and ensure that our nation is well-positioned to trade with the world.”
Accompanied by First Lady Madame Monica Chakwera, senior government officials, and party leaders, President Chakwera also took the opportunity to address critics who doubt his leadership capabilities because of his pastoral background.
“Let no one be misled into thinking that a pastor cannot run government affairs effectively,” he said with a smile, drawing applause from the audience. “This project is proof of our administration’s commitment to delivering real, transformative change for the people of Malawi.”
The First Lady beamed with pride as the President highlighted how the railway is part of a broader vision to modernize Malawi’s infrastructure and economy. The completion of the Beira-Malawi Railway line is seen as a cornerstone in Malawi’s strategic plan to strengthen its transport network and enhance regional trade relations, particularly with neighboring Mozambique.
As the railway line ushers in a new era of connectivity, Malawians can look forward to a more prosperous and interconnected future, thanks to this ambitious project led by President Chakwera’s administration.
