President Mutharika pardons 268 prisoners following Independence Day traditions

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security has announced that his Excellency the President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has Pardoned 268 prisoners as part of the 51st Independence Day celebrations.

The 268 prisoners who have been pardoned are those who have served at least half of their prison sentences, with good behavior and were not convicted of serious offences.

 

 

The Pardon of the 268 prisoners is a symbol of forgiveness as the country celebrates its 51st year of independence.

The President has the power to pardon prisoners and commute their sentences.

Malawi Prisons are seriously overcrowded and while only 12% of the prison population comprises pretrial detainees many spend lengthy periods awaiting trial, further taxing the system
