BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Malawians in Texas Organisation (Mito) and Malawians in Washington Association (MWA) have hailed President Peter Mutharika for ordering Justice minister Samuel Tembenu to draft a dual citizenship legislation saying that is a way to go as it will allow Malawians in diaspora to invest in their home land without challenges.
In a statement made available to local papers, the organisations, while pledging support for the enactment of the law, have pleaded with the concerned authorities to treat the issues as a matter of urgency.
“It is imperative that this great initiative moves forward so that both Malawians at home and abroad can benefit from an ever expanding global society,” reads the statement in part as quoted in The Nation.
Last month Mutharika told the state controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation that the ministry of Justice is currently working on the legislation which will enable Malawians hold dual citizenship.
The President said he will live to his promise he made in parliament that government will review dual citizenship law.
“We are currently drafting the legislation; very soon we will have the legislation. This will be possible because we want Malawians in diaspora to come to Malawi,” he said.
In 2014, Mutharika was a centre of controversy as the then Joyce Banda led administration believed that the president was not eligible to stand as the president arguing he was paying allegiance to United States of America by virtue of holding a green card.
Mutharika later bowed down to the pressure and he surrendered the green card to the American embassy in Lilongwe.
