KARONGA (Maravi Post)—With a day to go before commencement of the 2016 Malawi School Certificate of Examination (MSCE), private school owners in Karonga district have asked have asked government to abolish quota system of selecting students to go to public Universities describing it as an infringement of human rights.
The call was made during the graduation ceremony of form four students of Phoenix private secondary school in the district.
Speaking during the function, the director of the school Timothy Mwahimba, said that a number of students fail to continue with their education because of this system.
“We are here to say goodbye and pass our good wishes to the form four students who are expected to write the national exams on 22 June,” said Mwahimba.
However, as private schools in the northern region “we are concerned with the issue of quota system.”
“This ruins education of learners who pass exams with flying colors in order to go to public University. And we have many of them at our school” added Mwahimba.
Late Malawi President Bingu Wa Muthalika introduced the system.
“I have not introduced quota system in order to deal with northerners but to equalize chances of going to the public University,” the late Mutharika was quoted then.
However, most of the northerners regard the system as a tool of dealing with them and they have been calling government to abolish it.
The graduation ceremonywas attended by traditional leaders, Civil Society Organizations and the Police among others.
Best students in different subjects received were given awards.
