PRETORIA-(MaraviPost)-The South Africabased Malawian Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, the founder of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church, on Monday disputed media reports allegations that his bodyguards blocked South Africa Police to access him on legal matters.

Prophet Bushiri reaction comes after  two South African media houses, publishers of City Press and News24 on Sunday reported that his security detail had a three-hour standoff with South African Police. Aparantly the Police wanted to obtain a statement from him that ended with the officers fleeing the premises.

The media reports disclosed that South African Police had tried to obtain a statement from Bushiri, after Martin Antonio opened a case against the clergyman at the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities, during its investigation into churches.

According to the two online papers, Antonio, was present at the scene and was saved from the bodyguards by the VIP unit of Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa, who happened to be at the hotel at the time.

Antonio told the media that the Prophet, through his bodyguards, threatened to kill him, to ‘ “beat the hell out” me.’ Antonio said he managed to survive during the dramatic scene.

But Prophet Bushiri’s Communications Director Ephraim Nyondo, disputed the claims that bodyguards blocked the Police on Antonio’s legal issues.

Nyondo strongly refuted that the Prophet has any dealings with Antonio; he said the reports were not balanced as they did not have ECG’s comments and are also false.

He added that Prophet Bushiri is a law abiding person and he would cooperate with law enforcers at any time; he said the South Africa Police was legally mandated to perform its duties without fear and favor.

“Prophet Bushiri has no dealing with the so-called Antonio. The Police wanted the Prophet to be a witness in a case where a church member was assaulted by the man called Antonio, which the Man of God obliged. So, the Prophet will cooperate with the Police on the matter,” said Nyondo.

Vuyo Mhanga, Spokesperson for Police Minister Fikile Mbalula, is quoted as saying that the alleged cases between the church and Antonio will be looked into without hesitation for necessary action.
