BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In a surprising turn of events, the Director of Public Prosecution for Gauteng Province in South Africa, Sibongile Mzinyathi, testified in court in Lilongwe on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 that there was no concrete evidence to prove that Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary benefited from the R106 million they were arrested for in October 2020.
This revelation has stirred controversy and raised questions about the validity of the charges against the couple.
During cross-examination by Bushiri’s lawyer, Wapona Kita, Mzinyathi revealed that an independent audit conducted by KPMG in 2023 found no trace of the alleged funds being transferred to the accounts of either Bushiri or Mary.
This revelation directly contradicts the basis of the charges against the couple and casts doubt on the prosecution’s case.
Furthermore, Kita uncovered that only three out of the 13 charges brought against the accused are actually extraditable under South African law.
This discrepancy raises concerns about the legitimacy of the extradition request and the legal grounds on which the couple was arrested.
Chief state advocate, Dzikondianthu Malunda, expressed his admiration for Mzinyathi’s performance during the cross-examination, highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability in legal proceedings.
The courtroom atmosphere was tense as the revelations threatened to undermine the prosecution’s case and potentially exonerate the accused.
The Chief Resident Magistrate, Madalitso Chimwaza, adjourned the case to allow for further cross-examination of Mzinyathi, prolonging the suspense and uncertainty surrounding the high-profile trial.
The lack of concrete evidence and legal clarity in the case has sparked outrage among supporters of Bushiri and Mary, who have long maintained their innocence.
The controversy surrounding the Bushiri case has reignited debates about due process, fairness, and the accountability of legal authorities.
The unexpected turn of events in court has exposed the vulnerabilities in the prosecution’s case and raised questions about the motives behind the charges brought against the couple.
As the trial continues to unfold, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on the proceedings in Lilongwe, with observers eagerly awaiting the outcome of Mzinyathi’s cross-examination and the implications it may have on the future of the case.
The twists and turns in this high-stakes legal drama only serve to deepen the intrigue and uncertainty surrounding the fate of Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary.
