Ntcheu, January 19, 2016: Government has revised wages for beneficiaries of Public Works Programme (PWP) from K485 to K600 per day per person, translating to each beneficiary carting home K7, 200 after working for twelve days.
Speaking Tuesday when he briefed councilors, chiefs and Members of Parliament, Chief Public Works Officer for Ntcheu, Clement Mtambo said Ntcheu District has received a total allocation of K156, 530,944 towards PWP.
“Sixty per cent of this money is meant for wages for 13,044 beneficiaries and the rest of is meant for procurement of tools, implements, inputs such as tree seedlings and project administration,” said Mtambo.
Earlier, Chairperson for Ntcheu District Council, Councilor Shimita Njovu commended government for revising the wages considering rising living standards.
“This, I hope will in one way or the other cushion the hardships such as hungers which has hit almost all parts of the district,” said Njovu.
He then appealed to members of the council and members of area and village development committees to ensure that beneficiaries of the project are identified as stipulated in the Local Development Fund Operational Guide Lines.
“Let us follow the set-up procedures in identifying the beneficiaries to ensure that only deserving people benefit from the project and refrain from registering ghost workers,” he said.
The objective of PWP is to provide poor and vulnerable households with sources of income, particularly during the lean period to improve their food accessibility besides creating community assets such as village access roads, management and conservation of natural resources.
