LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The State of Qatar has pledged humanitarian aid to the Government of Malawi in response to an appeal for assistance.
The commitment has been announced by Lulwah Bint Rashid Al Khater, Minister of State for International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, during discussions with Malawi’s Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation, Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha in Qatar on Monday.
During the meeting, Mwanamvekha, who also serves as Malawi’s Special Envoy to the Gulf Nations outlined the country’s food shortage which has come about due to dry spell, affecting 4 million people.
The situation prompted His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, State President of the Republic of Malawi, to declare a State of National Disaster.
Mwanamvekha was accompanied by Malawi’s Ambassador to Qatar, Roy Akajuwe Kachale.
While in Qatar, he is expected to hold several meetings aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
The aid pledge comes as Malawi grapples with severe food insecurity, exacerbated by the dry spell that has impacted agricultural production.
