Raphael Tenthani killed in a car crash

Malawi’s columnist and journalist Ralphael Tenthani has died. Raphael Tenthani was also an award winning BBC Correspondent and former Consulting Editor for the country’s media giant, Times Media Group, died Saturday evening after being involved in an accident on his way to Ntcheu from Blantyre.

He was with his 2 children and his close associate Amos Phiri, a Book Designer at Dzuka Publishing, a subsidiary of Times Media Group.

The children were rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital where they are said to be in stable condition while Phiri is admitted at Mlambe hospital where Ralphael’s body is lying.

Tenthani has worked across various news outlets in Malawi and abroad. He was also one of the original reporters for The Maravi post bringing immediate credibility to the young publication.

Raphael Tenthani wrote a popular regular column called “Muckrakings” that was at times, controversial. In 2010, he was attacked by the ruling DPP party spokesperson for writing a ‘Muckracking column that was sympathetic to ostracized vice-president Joyce Banda, who was facing political isolation from President Bingu wa Mutharika. When Tenthani was in the hospital after a car accident in 2011, he received a visit from then vice-president Joyce Banda at the hospital.
