Solar Home Systems
The Solar Home System is an innovative product providing solar electricity for lighting in a house and charging small electronics like cell phones. The system costs less than what rural households are currently spending on candles, paraffin, dry cell batteries and fees for charging cell phones.
RECAPO Solar Systems has been established as the leading supplier of affordable, renewable and clean energy solutions for rural and peri-urban households. The company has received support and commendations from various organizations including World Bank Institute on Climate Change, US African Development Foundation, Ministry of Energy and Mining, Cancer Association of Malawi among others for its product and its business model; a Pay-As-You-Go electricity solution.
RECAPO has entered into agreement with Airtel Malawi, the biggest mobile providers. Villagers will now be able to pay for electricity via AirTel money on their mobile phones. This will encourage more households to change from using candles, paraffin lamps to solar energy..
Indigo Solar Home System was first rolled out in Kenya in 2011 and has since been made available in Zambia, Malawi, South Sudan, Uganda, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
How It Works
- You pay a small initial fee on installation
- Activate system using a weekly scratch card/ Top up card
- Enter the number in Indigo unit.
- Turn on! Power for one week.
- After purchasing a certain number of Top up cards, the system is unlocked
