Rwandan woman dies after failing in Lilongwe’s Mtandire pit latrine on New Year

Africa's COVID-19 death rate now higher than global rate

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-New year celebrations ended in a sombre mood in Mtandire as a 51-year old Rwandan woman died after falling in a pit latrine.

Lingadzi police station publicist Salomy Chibwana Zgambo identified the deceased as Martha Ofutinema.

Zgambo said the incident occurred on January 1, 2020 as Ofutinema went to answer call of nature when she met her fate after falling into a deep pit latrine.

“Efforts to retrieve her proved futile until some hours later when the police and community members pulled her out.

“She was taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) where she was pronounced dead upon arrival”, police publicist said.

She adds, ” The police are advising people to be more careful when using pit latrines during this rainy season since many latrines are precarious and a danger to life”.

Martha Ofutinema, 51, a Rwandan, was originally from Butali Province in Rwanda but was residing at Mtandire, Traditional Authority (T.A) Njerwa in Lilongwe.
