Kamuzu Day is a national event, and Kamuzu is celebrated as Republic of Malawi President, not Malawi Congress Party President.
In that regard, the event is completely the business of the government of the day. I am not sure if MCP needed to organize a parallel event and desperately lay a separate wreath at Kamuzu’s resting place.
In my view, the government having denied Dr. Chakwera attendance to the event, our party President should have just made a statement and stay away. Or, even more creatively, organize a huge rally at Chiwengo in Kasungu in honour of our Ngwazi.
As Malawi Congress Party, I think it’s good that we appreciate the boundaries in Kamuzu’s legacy between the man as President of MCP and him as Malawi President. Much of what is celebrated about Kamuzu is because of his work and achievements as Malawi President. In fact, almost everything that is celebrated on 14 may is celebrated in that regard. But, as a party, we seem to be so desperate to own the legacy of Kamuzu and cling to his portrait.
In my opinion, there was little wisdom in having Dr. Chakwera, MCP President, carry his wreath, lead his own procession and force matters to execute another wholly different ceremony in honour of the same Kamuzu on a national day that we celebrate the Kamuzu that led Malawi, not the Kamuzu that was MCP President.
For avoidance of doubt, there is no holiday for MCP’s Kamuzu, but there is a whole bank holiday for the Kamuzu that was Malawi’s head of government and state.
But then, it takes a lot of wisdom to understand this. Ambiri mmutu mwao muli utoto. Ndi mofuchilira. Sangadziwe kusiyana kwa ma Kamuzu awiri-wa. Kamuzu wadzulo uja anali Kamuzu wa dziko, not wachipani.
Zomwe tachita dzulo zija taonetsa kusazindikira pang’ono, komanso makani opanda ntchito. Chinakula ndi kumukakamira Kamuzu kuti ndi wathu, pamene Kamuzu wadzulo uja siwathu, ndi wa dziko. Wathu titha kupeza tsiku lina lilironse lomamukumbukira, and we don’t need to be invited to any place for such an event as party.
In essence, dzulo lija kukanakhala ngati kuli maBoma awiri. Chifukwa Boma linatuma Gangata ndipo panakwanira pamene paja. Nde mwambo wina uja sumafunikiranso. Sometimes we fight battles that we don’t even need to start. That one wasn’t necessary at all. That said, I wish there were a better treatment to our party President and his team than smoking them out. Sizinayende pamene paja
