Some sectors of Malawi Civil Servants defy public reforms

Malawi civil Servants are not abiding to the ongoing civil service reforms which Malawi government is undergoing.

Speaking to members of the Press on Tuesday, this week, Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima disclosed that Malawi President, Peter Mutharika has endorsed some proposals which Civil Service Reforms Commission submitted to him for approval.

However Chief Secretary George Mkondiwa was at pains to explain why some women working in government are still seen dancing for the head of state.

Mkondiwa said as government they cannot refuse women to enjoy and make merry with their leader.

“Members of the Press, you might be aware that there was a time when we used to close capital hill just because the head of state is holding a rally in Kawale, we graduated from that, then we had time that when a President is having function, all women civil servants were following him to dance, we also graduated from that but we are now into the stage that when a President is having a public function, on women from the line ministry or department follows him,so there is nothing we can do here,” said Mkondiwa.

Meanwhile, sources within government machinery indicates that although Mutharika issued a travel ban for austerity measures, Malawi is still spending a lot of money from its coffers through travels.

“There is no way Malawi as a country can develop if civil servants keep on moving from one country to another,” Said our source.

Former Malawi’s President late Bingu wa Mutharika also issued the same directive but it was still defied.

Malawi President Peter Mutharika restricted domestic travel by cabinet ministers and senior government officials to eight trips per month, they will not be allowed more than six foreign trips a year as a cost-cutting measure to support the zero-aid budget.

According to the Memo it was spelt that President will only approve trips which are beneficial to the state.

Our source said “Even when the trips are funded Government still tops them up.”
