“Sosten Gwengwe sacking as Finance Minister was long overdue”-FND

Gwengwe redeployed to Trade Ministry

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Forum for National Development (FND) has commended President Lazarus Chakwera for replacing Sosten Gwengwe with Simplex Chithyola as Finance Minister saying the shift was long overdue.

The grouping there expects sound economic policy direction that drive growth amid ailing economy.

On Saturday night, October 7, 2023 Gwengwe was sent back to Trade and Economic Development Ministry.

In the press statement dated October 8, 2023 signed by FND Chairperson and National Coordinator Bright Kampaundi and Fryson Chodzi respectively urges Chinthyola to meet Malawians’ expectations.

“After being faced with the circus of Brigdin Foundation, East Bridge fertilizer deal, the Barkaat Foods Limited, the Quay Energy and so many other financial scams including issuance of numerous sovereign guarantees, change at the Ministry of Finance has been inevitable, and we welcome the change that President Lazarus Chakwera has made, it has been long overdue and we congratulate him.

“We further extend our heartfelt congratulations to the appointee, Hon. Simplex Chithyola as new Minister of Finance in Malawi. We believe that for President Chakwera to make this appointment, he has trust and belief in the capabilities of the appointee,” reads FND in part.

“We are aware that before such appointments are made, a thorough background checks are undertaken and we commend you for ensuring that the appointment process upholds the highest standards of integrity and expertise.

“As Hon. Chithyola assumes the role of Finance Minister, we wish him all the success and extend our support. We urge him to uphold the principles of honesty, transparency, and accountability in his endeavors. It is vital that he remains steadfast in his commitment to eradicating corruption and avoiding any form of political contamination”, says FDN.

The grouping adds, “By leading with integrity, he will not only inspire trust among the people but also set an example for others in public service to follow.

“We encourage the new minister to stay the course on the International Monitory Fund (IMF) Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and prioritize the necessary discipline and reforms to keep Malawi on a sustainable path of
progress”.

“This program plays a crucial role in stimulating economic growth, improving fiscal management, and ensuring the well-being of our citizens. It is
essential that all efforts are made to implement the necessary measures with diligence and determination.

“We send our best wishes to Hon Simplex Chityola as he embarks on his new role as Finance Minister. May he serve our nation with dedication, competence,
and unwavering commitment to the development and prosperity of Malawi. Together, let us strive towards a brighter future for our beloved country”, urges FDN.

Who is Simplex Chithyola Banda?

Simplex Chithyola Banda was the Minister of Trade and Industry in Malawi since February, before his appointment as minister finance . On top of the ministerial portfolio, he is also a current Member of Parliament for Kasungu South Constituency.

Academically, the Minister holds a Master’s Degree in Public Policy & Administration (MSc.PPA); Post Graduate Diploma in Restorative Justice and International Human-rights; he is currently studying Doctorate of Philosophy in Public Policy & Administration to be completed soon.

Prior to his political career, he worked in public, private, and civil society organisations in Malawi.

He is a married man with a wife, Jean and they both have 4 Children, Regina (23), Sympathy (17) Dumisan (Simplex) (14) and Fortune (7).
