South African group to open 5 star Hotel in Lilongwe as Malawians plan to boycott SA business

Lilongwe, April 18, 2015: Malawi’s first Five Star Hotel will be officially opened on May 1 under the name Peermont President’s Hotel, Government has announced.

The Hotel is located at Umodzi Park Lilongwe which also includes the Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) .

 

Information, Tourism and Culture Minister Kondwani Nankhumwa described the opening of the hotel as a milestone in the country’s history in line with government’s vision of boosting the tourism sector and the economy.

“The hotel will enhance Malawi’s appeal as a destination for international conference and tourism thereby bringing in much needed foreign exchange and job creation for the locals,” Nankhumwa said.

Peermont President’s Hotel and BICC were constructed during Late President Professor Bingu Wa Mutharika reign. While BICC has been in use, the hotel had remained idle for a few years after construction was completed.

It comprises 130 rooms and suites, with 60 Classic King Rooms, 60 Classic Twin Rooms, a special assistance room and 10 Presidential Suites with air-conditioning and 40-inch Television.

Peermont is a South African based group running Hotels, Casinos and Resorts in South Africa, Botswana and now Malawi.
