Cardinals serve as advisers to the pontiff and vote to elect the next Pope. The newly named African cardinals are Fr. Stephen Brislin, archbishop of Cape Town; Fr. Protase Rugambwa, co-adjutor archbishop of Tabora, Tanzania; and Fr. Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla, archbishop of Juba, S. Sudan.
