South Africa’s PSL Golden boot award chase heats up: Malawi’s Gabadinho’s lead narrowed

Gabadinho Mhango leading the PSL golden boot award race

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Malawi’s talisman Gabadinho Mhango of Orlando Pirates is now leading the race for South Africa’s Premier Soccer League golden boot award by hair’s breadth as the Kaizer Chiefs gangling striker Samir Nurkovic and Highlands Park striker Peter Shalulile closes in with 13 goals each.

Mhango, has failed to score in two games since the restart of the PSL after a long break due to Covid-19 is leading with the race 14 goals, just one goal ahead of Nurkovic and Shalulile.

On Saturday, Gabadinho failed to score against his former side Bidvest Wits.

But Kaizer Chiefs striker Samir Nurkovic and Highlands Park striker Peter Shalulile have 13 goals each after scoring two goals and one goal each respectively since the restart of the game.

But Mhango has told media that he is not under pressure.

“Team glory comes first than my personal achievement. The break affected everyone but I will soon rediscover my scoring boots and help the team to win games,” said the former Nyasa Big Bullets forward.

Bradley Grobler of Super Sport United and Bongi Ntuli of Amazulu have 12 goals each.

South Africa-based Malawian journalist Benjamin Nyirenda, though admitting that the pressure is on Mhango, advised the attacker to concentrate on his game.

“You know both Shalulire and Norkovic have scored since the league restarted. Gaba has played two games against Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits and he has failed to score in both games which is not good for him.

“But he is still leading with a goal ahead of them. He should not put pressure on himself. He should forget about top goal scorer award and focus on playing well and scoring to help the team win. Pressure can take his concentration away and it will not be good at all. He still has the chance to win the Golden Boot Award,” he said.

Gabadinho is on the edge to become the first Malawian player to win the award in PSL.
