LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-One of the leading commercial banks in the country, Standard has emphasized on the need for government and other key players to exert much effort in uplifting education standards in the country.

Standard Bank Head of ICT William Nuka said this in Lilongwe when the bank donated 40 computers to Malawi College of Health Sciences on Tuesday.

Nuka said the bank was moved to donate the computers as a way of giving back to the community in form of corporate social responsibility.

“Standard Bank has been in existence in the country for 50 years now. Today is a special occasion for us as we continue celebrating our existence in the country with you. This donation is a testimony about the bank’s commitment towards the upliftment of education standards in the country,” said Nuka.

He said Standard Bank places a lot of value on education because it understands its impact on the socioeconomic development of the country.

“In this regard, the bank supports the education sector across all stages from primary school through secondary to tertiary levels.

Being a financial institution and corporate player, the bank benefits fully from education in the form of personnel that work for the bank and complimentary services rendered by other stakeholders like health services,” said Nuka.

He said the donation has come about as a result of deep and sober reflection on how best the bank could support the education sector, particularly Malawi College of Health Sciences.

Nuka said, “We do understand that the institution has many needs. However, we believe that computers and technology in general play a critical role in education these days.”

“It is a known secret that computers have transformed the way man conducts business on daily basis. Computers have become the most essential tool in the development of any sector in the world be it in the field of education, the financial industry, health services, aviation, manufacturing and the list goes on.”

Talking about Malawi College of Health Sciences, Nuka said it is the bank’s belief that computers are a prime enabler for the learning and teaching process.

He said Health Science is a specialist field that relies heavily on research and that It is the bank’s conviction that the donated computers will go a long way in aiding research, sharing of knowledge and academic networking within this institution and with all your stakeholders.

“Standard Bank is therefore proud to partner with Malawi College of Health Sciences in ensuring that the library remains of high standards. We are indeed pleased to make this donation to you so that together we can MOVE FORWARD in the quest of producing enlightened and quality graduates who will make lasting impact on the economy of Malawi,” said Nuka.

And in his remarks, Principal for Malawi College of Health Sciences Lilongwe campus, Dennis Nyirenda said the school was delighted at the bank’s gesture.

He said issues of congestion that the school used to experience at it’s library is no a thing of the past.

The donation, however, comes at a point the school is facing a lot of challenges following an on and off strike that has seen students going for over a year without learning.
