State House Chief Mukhito ignores court order Redeploys Household staff

Former Malawi Police service (MPS) Inspector General (IG) Peter Mukhito who is now the State House chief of staff is likely to hear from a judge for allegedly redeploying 20 of its household staff from State Residences despite court order restraining the move.

Peter Mukhito was fired by Joyce Banda as IG for his closeness to then President Bingu WA Mutharika.

Other government top officials who might suffer the same fate include director of State Residences Leckford Palani, deputy guard commander George Chikhungu.

On November 6, 2014 the Industrial Relations Court (IRC) issued a stay order restraining the State House officials from carrying out the redeployment exercise but the former MPS boss and other officials remained adamant, apparently with advise from government lawyers.

The development forced the Lawyer representing the victims, William Zapinga to ask the Court to commit Mukhito and the other officers to prison for not obeying a court order. However this is very unlikely.

The Court might order other remedies rather than the extreme punishment of arresting government officials for such a trivial matter as staffing matters.

Some of the victims in this exercise include Violet Nyirongo, Margaret Kazembe, Stella Mwembera, Henry Kambanje, Arabi Diastone, Sam Boniface, George Chitokoto and Paul Banda.

When approached for comment, Attorney General Kalekeni Kaphale asked for more time on the matter.
