An Open Letter to Information Minister Henry Mussa Over UTM Press Statement

Minister Mussa
Minister Mussa

Maenga is disappointed over your press release against the statement of apology from UTM president Saulos Chilima. If you think Malawi is living the past where your police lied to the country that Robert Chasowa committed suicide when in true sense your party killed him, you are mistakenly wrong.

Malawi of today is not ready to tolerate nonsense.

Few weeks ago when your party terrorized the nation your president Peter Mutharika failed to utter any word.  Upon growing pressure the president instructed Mgeme Kalirani to craft a statement that did not address what the nation expected.

Till now your government has not announced the identity of the terrorists or apprehend them. You must be ashamed and accept defeat because technically you are accepting failure of your government.

UTM and its president without any “outcry” from the public issued a statement of apology and promised compensation and we look forward for UTM to bring the culprit forward for justice to take its course.

In other words you are ashamed because you failed to do what Saulos Chilima has done; now you are trying to play micky mouse politics.  Not this Malawi where Maenga is watching!

No political party will play shinenigani politics again. We will shame you.

Servant leadership and a leader who respect the people and the law is what UTM and Saulos Chilima have displayed.

If this is the Malawi all political parties can play our nation will develop.

Mr. Minister, spare us political rhetorics, you have a lot to prove to us if you are able and fit to be in the government.

Where are the culprits who beat parliamentarian Bon Kalindo? Where are the culprits who burned UTM vehicles? Where are the culprits who dressed down a woman and what have you done to restore her divorced marriage?

Where are the killers of Robert Chasowa and Issa Njaunju?

Can you give space to UTM to show what they have in stock in case they get into the government?

Your statement is declared null and void. Let Maenga screen and scrutinize UTM, MCP,  PP and others not you.

Malawi Government Castigates Irresponsible reporting by one of the oldest Media Houses in the country

Fabiano and Mussa
Ministers; Fabiano and Mussa

Ministers Henry Mussa and Emmanuel Fabiano castigated the reporting by Times Media Group for its story that allegedly linked Malawi to terrorism attack in Kenya recently. The ministers were reacting to a their story published last Saturday which allegedly linked Malawi to terrorism attack in Kenya recently.

Times Media was not alone to having fallen to the unsubstantiated accusation made against Malawi. Malawi has been implicated in Kenyan terrorist incidents including the latest one involving a luxury hotel this week. A producer and analyst of renowned South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Izak Khomo claimed there is a Malawian connection to the terrorism after an attack that happened Tuesday this week killing at least 21 people in Nairobi, Kenya.

Both Mussa and Fabiano challenged the paper that the story was baseless and had no facts based on an opinion. Times Media has the resources to have verified the story before posting it.

According to reports Times Group made mmatters worse by not attending a presser that the two Minister addressed to refute the irresponsible reporting. Almost all media houses in Lilongwe were available at the news conference apart from The Times.

Allegidly Minister Mussa was said to be angered further when he noticed that the Times had boycotted the news conference which was specifically scheduled to address their article.

A media analyst said by boycotting the news conference, Times Group admitted that their story was erroneous and baseless. ‘They should have braved the press conference,” the analyst said.

“Their absence is an admission that they are in the wrong and in that case they should swallow their pride and retract the story,” he said.

Minister Mussa says Department of Information will be adequately resourced

Lilongwe, January 12, 2018: Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Henry Mussa has acknowledged challenges affecting the Department of Information (DoI) which he said need quick redress to enhance dissemination of news, the core task of the department.

Among the challenges are improper channels of information distribution, small budget allocation, inadequate personnel including reporters and photographers at Malawi News Agency (Mana) headquarters’ newsroom and Boma Lanthu.

The minister appreciated the challenges when he visited offices of the department at area 3 in Lilongwe on Thursday.

Mussa said the ministry would discuss the problems with the Ministry of Finance and Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) to address the challenges.

“We need to do more with the budget because it is quite little, so much that a majority of the works are not carried out.

“We also want our workers to have resources for them to reach out in rural and urban communities with information through distribution of publications like Boma Lanthu and Malawi Lero,” he said.

Mussa further said the ministry would recruit reporters and photographers, including filling all the vacant positions in the department to simplify the work of giving out information to the public and reduce chances of mismanaging the work.

In his remarks, Director of Information, Gideon Munthali concurred with the minister, saying as government’s communication centre, the department needed to have adequate resources like public address equipment, cameras and other tools and policies for it to be effective in information dissemination.

“We have been functioning without enabling policies and strategies in communication but due to the coming in of the minister to our department, we hope that he will put our challenges into consideration,” Munthali told Mana in an interview.

Minister Mussa commends MDBNL for provision of free television channels

Lilongwe, January 11, (MaraviPost): Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Henry Mussa has commended Malawi Digital Broadcasting Network Limited (MDBNL) for provision of free local television channels to people in most parts of the country.

The minister made the recommendation on Thursday during his tour to MDBNL offices in Lilongwe that provide digital television decoders popularly known as Kiliye kiliye TV decoders.

In an interview, the Minister said the initiative of Kiliye kiliye digital TV which is under his ministry, was aimed at allowing the public to access free information.

“We ensure that Malawians are able to access local channels free and at a lower cost for international television channels, which is helpful in the development of the country,” he said.

MDBNL Director of Marketing and Public Relations, John Mchilikizo revealed that though they provide free local television channels to the public, the institution has introduced pay services for international channels.

“We are still registering people that are coming on our platform and are still adding numbers of television channels that will help us generate little revenue to ensure our growth and sustainability of works,” he said.

Mchilikizo further commended government for supplying them with enough digital television decoders every year which has assisted them to cover a large population both in rural and urban areas.

He further said the company has extended its network within and outside Lilongwe. The company also has its television network in Blantyre, Mzuzu, Thyolo, Zomba and Karonga, just to mention a few areas.

DPP convention; Trade Minister Mussa survives death trap at Kaphuka

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Minister of trade and ruling party aspirant for the vice president for the southern region Henry Mussa last Sunday night was attacked by 19 thugs led by Ben chitenje as one way of preventing him from meeting his supporters.

His motor vehicle was badly damaged by the panga wielding thugs and they had two rifles. Mother luck and God were on Henry Mussa”s side as the thugs were asking Mike Ben chitenje for further instructions before the cabinet minister found his way out.

As of now the motor vehicle is badly damaged and the police are investigating.

According to sources within the A team of Dpp being spearheaded by Ben Phiri, Jeffery wa Jeffery and Kondwani Nakhumwa the thugs had instructions to kill but failed since others were remembering the Chasowa incident where Mike Ben chitenje was one of the accused.

The DPP Secretary General Jeffery wa Jeffery was unwilling to comment saying that those thugs were party of the convention security committee. She said that it was mistaken identity since they were looking for movement members.

Kondwani Nakhumwa is fighting tooth and nail to clinch the vice president for the southern region seat.

He has also persuaded minister of justice Samuel Tembenu to join the race for the central region even though he is from the south. Ben Phiri is behind all this political machinations so that he can have a puppet president and vice-president. Paving way for himself in 2024.

Foreign direct investments a tool for development-President Mutharika

President Peter Mutharika has said foreign direct investment is a vital catalyst for the country’s development.

Speaking on Tuesday during the ground breaking ceremony for the Sogecoa Business Park site at Chichiri in Blantyre, Mutharika said foreign direct investment, particularly from the Chinese Government have proved to be crucial to the country’s development.

Mutharika observed that the Sogecoa facility was a symbol of progress for Blantyre City Council whose growth had stagnated. He said the city would continue to grow again to stand tall as the country’s vibrant commercial hub.

“For sometime Blantyre stopped growing and now time has come for the country’s commercial city to start growing again – thanks to the Chinese whose investment will help in creating jobs and wealth,” Mutharika said.

“The construction of the Sogecoa Golden Peacock Five-Star Hotel will also return the lost glory of the once Mighty Blantyre City. The magnificent building, once completed, will also beautify the city of Blantyre and Malawi as a whole,” he said.

Mutharika commended the Chinese Government for the tremendous work it was doing to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two countries, citing the construction of Parliament Building, Bingu National Stadium and Malawi University of Science and Technology, among others.

The Malawian leader, therefore, outlined some of the major development programmes his administration has put in place for the city of Blantyre citing the construction of a dual carriage road from the Clock Tower to Chileka International Airport and a ring road from Chileka through Magalasi all the way to Chinyonga – Michiru and back to Chileka.

He said construction of the two roads would start in January 2018 since resources for the project had already been identified, noting that Chileka Airport would also be upgraded to fit international standards.

“My government will also construct a 186 kilometre ring road from Chileka through Lunzu, Chigumula to Limbe. The DPP – led government will also construct a new stadium at Njamba Freedom Park and rehabilitate the Kamuzu Stadium from January 2018. In fact the artificial turf is already on the way,’’ the President said.

He, therefore, appealed to people in the country to maintain peace, saying it was necessary for the country’s prosperity and that government launched the National Peace Architecture which would operate at all governance structures to promote the same across the country.

Mutharika also expressed satisfaction with the country’s economic performance, describing it as stable, which would attract more investors to Malawi in the process.

“I am very optimistic that an improved economy is possible. We took over government when there was cash-gate. That year, there was also low crop production due to floods and we set out on zero – supported budget,” he said.

“But I am pleased that now there are some good indicators because inflation and interest rates are down and we have adequate foreign exchange reserves,” added Mutharika.

On this note, Mutharika emphasised that the DPP – led government had always enjoyed cordial working relations with various religions in the country, saying some disgruntled politicians were working with religious bodies to bring down his government.

He, therefore, advised Malawians not take to the streets whenever there was a dispute but instead should remain calm and resolve issues amicably.

Speaking earlier, Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Henry Mussa said the construction of the five-star hotel was in line with the DPP government manifesto which indicated that it would construct such a facility in Blantyre City.

“We are slowly writing a new page in the history of Malawi’s development programme. The construction of the five-star hotel will go a long way in absorbing the many graduating students from various community technical colleges that have been established,” Mussa said.

“The hospitality industry is indeed bringing in a lot of investors as demonstrated in this Sogecoa project,” Mussa added while encouraging more Chinese companies to come to invest in Malawi.

In his remarks, Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Shi –Ting Wang expressed gratitude on the sound bilateral relationship existing between China and Malawi. He reminded Malawians the two countries were celebrating 10 years of cooperation.

The Chinese Ambassador pledged his country’s continued support to various development initiatives taking place in Malawi.

Government accuses opposition parties for perpetuating “blood sucker” terror

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)- The Malawi Government on Wednesday,  blamed on opposition parties as the ones instigating ‘blood suckers’ incidences in Mulanje and surrounding areas, which so far have left five people dead.
Addressing the press in Lilongwe both Minister of Information and Communications, Nicolas Dausi, and Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Henry Mussa, described the attacks as ‘mythical,’ and called for concerted efforts to deal with the situation.
Mussa said the whole issue hinges on superstition, as there is no evidence of any person ‘sucked of blood’ in the affected areas.
The Trade Minister added that Government will deploy a team to intensify civic education countrywide to stop the killings.
But, both Mussa and Dausi speculated that they suspect political influence in these attacks, and that they are aimed at tarnishing the image of the current Administration.
“Why only one part of the country affected by these attacks? And where are all the 55 political parties in this country, where are the 515 CSOs? Why are they quiet on this issue, where life has been lost? This silence gives us an indication that some people are behind the attacks to score political points.” said Dausi.
The two ministers also appealed to donors not to rush to withdraw their workers in the affected areas saying the situation is under control.
Dausi particularly sent a message to development partners that they should learn to inform Government before writing their governments about the situation in the country.
Mussa however, observed that the way the issue is being portrayed may affect tourism, which contributes significantly to the economy.
According to Dausi President Peter Mutharika has directed a 24-hour operation in all the affected areas to tighten security.
However, he could not explain what the operation is all about.
However, People’s Party (PP) Secretary General, Ibrahim Matola rubished the accusations and argued that the Mutharika Administration has failed to contain the situation.
Matola told The Maravi Post that it was strange for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leadership to blame the opposition parties when the area in question are their strong hold.
He therefore, advised Government to tread careful with unfounded statements that will continue to perpetuate violence in the country.

Malawi postpones 2017 Investment Forum; Govt consolidating bankable projects

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country will not host the lucrative Malawi Investment Forum (MIF) this year as government is consolidating 2015 and 2016 bankable projects for effective implementation.

Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Henry Mussa made the announcement on Monday in Lilongwe upon arrival from the United Kingdom (UK) trip, where he interacted with potential investors in a series of 15 meetings his delegation attended.

Mussa told The Maravi Post that 2017 the MIF postponement will give government enough time to consolidate bankable projects that local and international investors committed to in the past two forums.

The Minister emphasized the need for the country to implement programs in trickling down economic growth than to make other agreements.

He therefore assured the nation that MIF will be held in June 2018, and with serious investors. This is particularly in the energy sector, which remains the country’s challenge to invigorate economic growth.

“It’s not right to keep on making business agreements without following its implementation. So, the next nine months, the ministry will consolidate all the business ventures that were committed to in the last two investments fora.

“A technical committee will be put across to follow up all bankable projects agreed upon in the past to avoid duplication of the same projects instead of having new ones. So, we will not host 2017 MIF till June next year when we expect to host another exciting event,” Mussa said.

Echoing on the same, Clement Kumbemba, the Malawi Investment and Trade Centre’ (MITC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), whose agency accompanied the Trade Minister’s trip to the UK, said the nation was on truck in making sure that agreed business ventures are implemented in a timely manner.

Kumbemba added that business agreements, particularly in the energy sector, are bearing fruits following two companies plans to launch a 40-megawatts energy plant at Golomoti in Dedza by end of this year.

In the UK, the minister’s meetings dwelled on different sectors such as infrastructure development, energy, manufacturing, agro-processing, hospitality industry and health issues to do with pharmaceuticals and education among others.

Mussa met with energy producing companies, which expressed interest in setting up a 100-megawatt solar farm in the country on a 400-acre piece of land with a tariff of US$0.11.
