Diaspora Malawians Celebrate another Independence Day without Dual Citizenship

Malawi observed its fifty-first independence day this week. Millions of Malawians vast Diaspora gathered together on July 6th, 2015 to commemorate the day in solidarity with fellow Malawians living within the nations borders. They organized independence celebrations in the USA, South Africa, UK and other areas around the world.

Such annual gatherings in which they pay homage to Malawi reflect their continued recognition of Malawi as their homeland – regardless of where they reside or what passport they hold. It also reflects the desire of people of Diaspora Malawians to retain ties with Malawi.

Malawi diaspora in Europe to discuss dual citizenship with government officials

With its continued concerted effort to maintain strong links and instil interests among those in diaspora about their homeland, the Malawi government is to hold talks with representatives of the Malawi community through the Malawi Diaspora in Europe from 28 to 29 May 2015 in Dublin, Ireland.

The two-day meeting will focus on among other things consultancy on the development of the Malawi’s diaspora policy which is still being drafted. When implemented the policy will help in paving way on how best those in diaspora can help in the social-economic development of Malawi and how the government can best involve them, in its planned projects in various sectors.
