2017 MSCE invigilators not yet paid; TUM not happy with MANEB’s gross negligence

Mzuzu (Maravipost)—Malawi National Examination board (MANEB) has not yet paid teachers who invigilated the 2017 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examination, Maravi Post has learnt.

Speaking in an interview with Times Radio, Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) General Secretary Charles Kumchenga lamented the conduct of MANEB and said that they are still waiting for the Zomba based examination body to give them money.

MANEB is supposed to pay about K1.2 billion to the invigilators. The body admitted that it is broke and that it has requested the Ministry of Finance to bail it out.

MANEB spokesperson Simeon Maganga said that the board is trying its level best to push the Ministry of Finance to give them the money.

However, Kumchenga is not amused with MANEB’s exploitative conduct. He argued that it does not make sense for MANEB to behave in this manner cognizant of the fact that the body abolished administration of Junior Certificate Examination in the name of saving money.

He lamented that it does not make sense for TUM to be complaining of the same problem every year.

MANEB says PLSCE exams success; registers three cheating cases, yet to pay invigilators

ZOMBA-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi National Examination Board (MANEB), this week said the just ended Primary Leaving School Certificate of Education (PLSCE)-standard eight examinations were successful, with only a few cheating cases having been registered.

The standard eight exams started on May 17 and ended on May 19, 2017. The exams were taken in all primary schools across the nation; with cheating cases registered in three places in Blantyre rural and urban, and Mangochi districts.

In all the cheating cases, the alleged suspects were arrested for contravening regulations guiding the proper conduct of national examinations.

But MANEB is yet to pay officers who helped in conducting the exams. The national examination Board has apologized for the anomaly, with an assurance that the affected invigilators will get their allowances as soon as possible.

In a summary press statement released on Saturday, and made available to The Maravi Post the Board lauded all stakeholders for owning the exams, hence a few cheating cases and zero exams leakage.

The Board said the cheating cases recorded during the exams, were as a result of tip-offs received from the public through direct phone calls, messages through  MANEB Face book page, TNM toll-free line, and the Biard WhatsApp account number.

MANEB said delivery of all examination materials, including candidates’ identity cards, was done on time and that all designated examination administration centers, successfully administered the examinations without fail.

The examination body however, said that it was not able to pay allowances before the beginning of the examinations due to challenges beyond its control, but the Board assured the concerned that the payments are being processed to pay those that took part in the exercise.

“The Board is currently working tooth and nail to ensure that the forth-coming 2017 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations should not face the same challenge. It’s for this reason MANEB would like to thank all stakeholders and the public for owning the national examinations, and participating in the exercise. MANEB will continue engaging various stakeholders in its quest to make examination malpractices history for the general good of our country,” reads the MANEB’s statement.

About 271, 000 candidates registered for the 2017 Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) examinations.

Maneb set for Standard 8 exams on Wednesday: introduces WhatsApp number for whistle-blowers

Maganga- MANEB Spokesperson

ZOMBA-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi National Examination Board (MANEB) this week said, all is set to administer this year’s examination, starting with Primary Leaving School Certificate of Education (PLSCE)-Standard eight, slated for Wednesday, May 17 across the country.

Manebo has therefore introduced a WhatsApp account: +265884049215, which is intended and expecting to increase its engagement with the public on any exams concerns.

The number will also be used for whistleblowers on any malicious practice during the entire exams period, where all concerns will be addressed.

According to the board, the number is not a WhatsApp Group, but just a WhatsApp account that no one will be added. It will only get direct feedback from the public privately and freely.

MANEBO Spokesperson Simeon Maganga, said that the board has made great strides in preparing for the 2017 PLSCE.

Maganga expects less cheating this year, due to various intervention MANEB established ahead of the exams, including mass campaigns and introduction of the WhatsApp account number.

“Since the highest recorded percentage of cheating in 2002 at 8%, the board has made progress in fighting exam malpractices, and the numbers have since declined.

“Just this previous year on cheating in exams, the percentage was less than 0.01%, meaning that we’ve made significant progress in curbing exams fraud. We expect less further cheating this year, due to interventions put in place,” assures Maganga.

Out of 255,087 candidates who sat for the 2016 PSLCE exams, 197,222 qualified for the award of the PLSCE representing a 77.3 percent pass rate; and out of the 197,222 internal candidates who passed the examinations, 69,587 candidates were selected to various public secondary schools. This represents a 35.28 percent selection rate.

Meanwhile, MANEB starting this year, will no longer administer the Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) Examinations.

Not pass list but points register; subject by subject & their totals in best 6 subjects across Malawi: Check 2016 MSCE results here

Not pass list but points; subject by subject & their totals in best 6 subjects across Malawi: Check 2016 MSCE results hereZOMBA (Maravi Post)—We have been overwhelmed with requests for the actual points students have scored during the recently released MSCE exams subject by subject and their totals.

Lucky enough, our team have managed to access the grades register right from the headquarters of the Malawi National Examination Board (Maneb) in the country’s old capital city of Zomba. This is where you will see grades of candidates in every school across the country.

We though it wise to bring this information to your attention for it is importance in two ways:

Firstly, you will know how your child performed and more importantly, you will have an idea of how schools are performing; whether to transfer your son or daughter to a better school more especially when it comes to private schools.

Ladies and gentlemen, the document is in Microsoft Access and you can download it by clicking HERE.

If this message comes when downloading (Google Drive can’t scan this file for viruses.

2016 MSCE PASSFAIL.mdb (97M) exceeds the maximum size that Google can scan. Would you still like to download this file?) Just click download anyway. By the way, you need quite good internet connection for it is a large file.

QUICK INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOU TO SUCCESSFULLY CHECK THE RESULTS AFTER DOWNLOADING

MICROSOFT ACCESS is not just like Microsoft word where every jim and jack can easily use. So for the less computer literate ones, please follow the below instructions for you to check the names.

When you open the downloaded document—Microsoft Access—double click it where you are seeing 2016 PASSFAIL.

After that, a window will open where you will be seeing such information like “regional name,” “Centre name,” “Student ID,” there you will see a drop down arrow; Click it, unselect the option “select all” and the, select again the region of your choice, that is where the school is.

For example, if you want to see results for Luwinga CDSS, then you will select Northern Region, thus under Region.

Under District, you will also see a drop down menu; and then deselect all just like you did above and select in this case “Mzuzu Urban” where Luwinga CDSS is located. Then Select the Centre name, thus the school in question which in our case is Luwinga CDSS. You are done and see the results, that are where the points of the candidates subject by subject and their total points in the best 6 subjects are for this school.

To avoid confusion, you can close the document and restart again, if you want to check the results for other centers.  Don’t save anything when it asks you to save otherwise you risk tampering with the commands assigned and you will end up not accessing more results.

Your feedback will be much appreciated.
