KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-Karonga North constituents have expressed their dismay with President Peter Mutharika for dropping their parliamentarian, Mungasulwa Mwambande, from cabinet.

Mwambande was deputy minister of energy, and was dropped from cabinet during Mutharika’s most recent cabinet reshuffle.

MaraviPost understands that Mwambande, who is one of the most successful businesspersons in the lakeshore district, was given the ministerial post for his “loyalty” to the party and financial contributions.

During a fundraising dinner at Mzuzu State Lodge, Mwambande is said to have paid MK5 million for a seat to sit next to the President Mutharika.

And speaking during a party meeting at Kaporo Primary School on Monday, June 8, 2020 a number of constituents said they were “disappointed.”

The constituency’s governor, Moses Mwalwanda, said Mutharika “must have maintained Mwambande in cabinet,” said Mwalwanda:

“This country knows that Mwambande did a lot for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) during the 2019 elections. In fact, it is our constituency that gave the party the most votes as far as the northern region is concerned. So we feel it is very unfortunate that our MP was dropped.”

When contacted, Mwambande refused to comment. “I was not at that meeting. It was their own initiative, and therefore it is very difficult for me to comment,” he said.
