Old Mutual donates MK3.75m towards SADC parliamentary forum

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Old Mutual donates MK3,750,000 to parliament of Malawi for the purchasing of 250 golf shirts to be used at SADC parliamentary forum plenary assembly which will be held in Lilongwe from July 7 to 16, 2022.

The meeting which is expected to be launched by SADC Chairperson, Lazarus Chakwera on July 11 will be themed at “Towards energy efficiency sustainability and self sufficiency in SADC regions”.

In his remarks Old Mutual Managing Director, Roy Punungwe said the 51st conference will enable the country to be on the map which prompt old Mutual to help when they knock on their door for help.

Punungwe said parliament remains a key stakeholder to the insurance company as most of the customers are families and employees of the house.

He commended government for working so hard in ensuring that the country successfully leads the Region block since assuming SADC chairmanship in august 2021.

Receiving the donation, Clerk of Parliament, Fiona Kalemba lauded the firm for timely support that the the upcoming 51st Plenary of the SADC Parliamentary Forum will be a success.

Kalemba observes that company’s support towards the hosting of the very important conference symbolizes the mutual relationship that exists between Parliament and the Private Sector in Malawi.

The 51st conference marks the 3rd SADC conference for parliament to host in the country as in October, 2007, Parliament of Malawi hosted the 23rd Plenary Assembly in Blantyre whilst the 32nd SADC-PF Plenary Assembly was held in Mangochi in 2021.

Old Mutual warms against pension funds’ non remittance

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Old mutual pension services company has express worry over the tendency of some employers who fails to remit pension funds of their employees.

Old mutual pension services general manager Taonga Manda said this on Thursday, May 26, 202 in Blantyre when the firm engaged trustees of old mutual pension services company.

Manda further said that failing to remit employees pensions contributions is punishable under the pension act.

He observed that some of employers have got a tendency of remitting pension contributions when their workers are about to retire from the service which causes some delays in sorting out the employee which is very inconvenient.

He therefore called upon employers to remit pension contributions in time so that they should not be hustlers when retirees wants to correct their dues.

Old Mutual donates relief items to Chikwawa flood survivors

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Old Mutual Foundation has donated relief items worth 1.4 million Kwacha to floods survivors at Kalima and Kanseche camps in Chikwawa district, Traditional Authority (T.A) Maseya.

The donation comes following the devastating effects of Tropical Cyclone Ana and Gombe that ripped parts of the country earlier this year.

The relief items donated include corn soya blend porridge flour that is targeting under five children and 200 food hampers consisting of fortified maize flour, soya pieces, instantly Thobwa, plates, cups and blankets.

Rex Kadzongwe, Old Mutual Foundation Board Trustee said the organization is committed to support those affected by disasters as it believes in living in harmony with people in communities.

“Today, we have donated relief items worth M1.4 million. We previously made a donation earlier this year worth MK10 million but we believe the needs of people are endless.

“We are, therefore, committed to respond to the needs of the people we serve and we will not stop here but continue to support them with any supplies we will find along the way”, said Kadzongwe.

In his response to the donation, the Relief and Rehabilitation Officer for Chikwawa District Council, Humphrey Magalasi, said the donation from Old Mutual is a timely intervention as the council is mobilizing resources for the people to return in their homes.

“We are currently working on camp decommissioning and the intervention by Old Mutual Foundation is perfectly timed. The relief items provided by the organization will help the flood survivors to recover from the shocks while we are still working on providing permanent solutions to them,” Said Magalasi.

He added that the district council in partnership with government and other non governmental organizations as well as companies have mobilized recourses for swift camp decommissioning.

He also said so far, about 31 out of 71 camps have been decommissioned and the process is still ongoing.

Magalasi said the council is also working on early recovery interventions which will include providing agricultural inputs to flood survivors to help them recover from the shocks when they return in their homes.

Speaking to one of the beneficiaries, Layton Thom, he commended Old Mutual Foundation for the support.

He has also urged other well wishers to continue providing support to the camp residents as there are still many areas that the flood survivors are still lacking.

Chikwawa is one of the districts in Malawi that was largely affected the devastating impacts of Tropical Storm Ana and Gombe in late January.

Statistics indicate that the disaster affecting more than 900,000 people and killed nearly 50 others in Malawi.
