Man arrested/on man hunt

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Police Service (MPS) is keeping in custody the proprietor of Team Kwezy buses Benson Vitsitsi on allegations of externalising foreign currency amounting to US$5.7 million.

According to police the offence was committed in 2017 and involves 12 other suspects 10 of which are Chinese nationals who have since fled the country.

Deputy national police spokesperson Alfred Chimthere told the Nation online that the two other suspects, identified as Angella Chagwira and Monica Arame, who were employees of one of the local banks, are also targeted for arrest for allegedly playing a role in this illegal transaction which took place in 2017.

Chimthere said the suspects will be answering charges bordering on “illegal externalization of forex, money laundering, conspiracy to commit an offence, and aiding another to commit offences”.

Asked why it has taken almost six years to effect an arrest, Chimthere said the police were investigating the matter all this while.

The arrest comes amid the country’s grappling with forex shortages.
