Former President Joyce Banda has made a bold statement regarding the unfulfilled agreement within the Tonse Alliance.
She claims to have been a witness when President Lazarus Chakwera and former Vice President, the late Saulos Klaus Chilima, agreed that each of them would govern for five years.
According to Banda, this agreement was meant to ensure that after Chakwera’s first term, Chilima would take over as president for the next five years.

However, this arrangement did not materialize as expected.
Banda explains that President Chakwera and his inner circle later made it clear that he would seek re-election, contradicting the initial promise.
This unexpected decision by Chakwera and his team shocked many, including Chilima himself.
Banda recounts that Chilima was deeply surprised by this development.
Feeling betrayed, he sought clarity from Banda regarding the agreement.
Chilima approached Banda and asked her to confirm whether the document they had signed indeed contained the agreement that Chakwera was now disregarding.
He expressed concern that the situation made it seem as if he was lying about the arrangement.
In response, Banda assured Chilima that she had indeed signed the document.
Her confirmation served as proof that the original agreement existed, but it had been ignored by Chakwera’s side.
Banda’s revelations highlight the growing mistrust and political maneuvering that has defined the Tonse Alliance.
The fallout from this broken promise raises questions about the credibility of political agreements and the integrity of leaders who make them.
As Malawi prepares for the next elections, these events will likely shape political debates and voter decisions.
