The M1 Kacheche Chiweta road: A roadmap of progress under Chakwera’s leadership

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-In Malawi, we’ve heard many promises about development that often don’t come to life. But the changes happening on the M1 Road, especially the 66.5-kilometre stretch from Kacheche to Chiweta, are worth celebrating. This isn’t just about progress; it’s a shining example of leadership that actually delivers.

Under President Lazarus Chakwera, the story of Malawi’s development is slowly but surely changing. The work being done on this important stretch of road by China Henan International Cooperation Group Company Limited is making a real difference. It’s bringing hope and renewed confidence to our communities and everyone who travels this route.

For too long, this part of the M1 Road was a source of frustration—full of potholes, erosion, and long travel times. But now, it’s transforming into something much better. This road is crucial; it connects the north to the central and southern economic hubs. It helps farmers get their produce to market, boosts tourism to beautiful spots like Livingstonia and Nyika, and makes trade across borders easier.

This isn’t just about building a road; it’s about creating infrastructure with purpose. It’s development that cares about the people. It shows a government that isn’t just thinking about today but is also planning for a brighter tomorrow.

President Chakwera has often talked about how important infrastructure is for growth. While politics can sometimes feel like a shouting match, projects like the M1 Kacheche–Chiweta rehabilitation are quietly changing lives for the better. They’re making it easier to reach markets, lowering vehicle maintenance costs, cutting travel times, and improving road safety.

Now, some might ask: is this enough? And the answer is no, it’s not. Malawi still faces many challenges in development. But we also need to take time to celebrate the genuine progress we see. We should encourage this momentum to keep going. A good transport network is the backbone of a thriving economy and happy citizens.

The Chakwera administration is showing us that change is possible when leadership is focused and committed to getting results. The M1 Road is a prime example of what can be achieved when promises are matched with action.

As citizens, our role goes beyond just holding the government accountable; we also need to recognize and support efforts that lift our nation. The Kacheche–Chiweta road project is one such effort—clear, visible, and impactful.

Let’s give credit where it’s due. Let’s applaud the progress and push for it to continue. A better Malawi begins with foundations like these—built one kilometre at a time.
