“There isn’t justification for MCP to hold parallel Kamuzu Day event”-Activist Chimwemwe Mbeya Mhango

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-One of the country’s human rights activists Chimwemwe Mbeya Mhango Ntchindi has questioned opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP)’s legality to hold parallel Kamuzu Day celebrations after state held the same function.

Mhango Ntchindi observes that MCP action was uncalled and unacceptable.

The activist told The Maravi Post on Saturday that MCP leadership must embrace President Peter Mutharika’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)-led government than causing confusion.

Mhango states further, “Kamuzu Day is state function not political event. This is the reason Kamuzu family attended this year’s event.

“There is no justification for MCP to hold a parallel event after the state held the same function”.

He argues further, “The moment MCP organised similar event at the same place, it meant belittling Mutharika’s leadership which is wrong.

“MCP must stop politicking Kamuzu Day. The party must accept the political atmosphere that its no longer in power”.

Mhango however rebuked other groups that are sympathisering with MCP for being teargassed on Kamuzu Day.

“On what grounds should government investigate on what happened to MCP leader Lazarus Chakwera and supporters for holding a parallel Kamuzu Day?

“State or public events must be respected and commemorated with honor and dignity all the time. So, this call for investigation is nonstarter”.

MCP and former President Chakwera were teargassed on Thursday at Kamuzu Mausoleum in capital Lilongwe after holding parallel Kamuzu Day.

Prior to Kamuzu Day, Malawi Government issued a statement banning head of political parties to attend this year’s event.

This did not go well with MCP leadership hence hosting parallel Kamuzu Day at the same Mausoleum.
