Three nabbed for stealing cement in Malawi’s Likoma Island

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)—Police in the Island District of Likoma are keeping in custody three men for allegedly stealing seventy bags of cement worthy K630, 000. 00 kwacha.

According to Likoma Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Mcliff Ngulube, the suspects are William Edson, who was working as a foreman, Sydney Mphande and Wellos Petro who were working as security guards.

Reports indicate that Liu Construction Company which belongs to Liu Zhenjiang, is planting solar panel schemes at Likoma and Chizumulu Islands, delivered 200 bags of cement at Chizumulu plant site on Friday July 17, 2020.

Thereafter, on Sunday, July 26, 2020, the manager was surprised to learn that Chizumulu Plant Site had run short of bags of cement. When
Liu asked the Plant Supervisor to conduct a stock taking, it was discovered that seventy bags of cement were missing.

It is at this point that the matter was reported to Likoma Police Station and officers visited the scene of crime.

After conducting investigations, the three were, on Monday July 27, 2020, arrested as suspects. When the Police interviewed them, they admitted having stolen the bags of cement in question.

The trio will appear in court soon to answer a charge of theft by servant.

Edson, 32, hails from Lile Village,Traditional Authority (T/A) Msamala in Balaka; Mphande, 45, hails from Chikolechi Village, Traditional Authority Kaluluma in Kasungu while Wellos, 27, hails from Gamba Village, Traditional Authority Makwangwala in Ntcheu.

Meanwhile, Police in the district strongly condemn the behaviour and stress to make sure that anyone who is connected to this be brought to book.
