Today’s Editorial: Is Dalitso Kabambe, a breath of fresh air in Malawian politics?

When Dr Dalitso Kabambe (DK) won the United Transformation Movement (UTM) presidency in November last year, skepticism abounded.

Having resigned from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), where he was seen as a frontrunner for the presidency, many questioned his motives.

Fears of UTM losing its identity, fragmenting, and fading away were palpable. However, in a remarkable turn of events, DK, the former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor has proved his doubters wrong.

UTM hasn’t collapsed; instead, it has been invigorated by DK’s leadership.

The party is now more united than it has been in years, thanks to his ability to bring people on board and ease resentment.

His message is clear, focused, and consistent, speaking directly to the economic hardships Malawians face and suggesting practical solutions.

DK’s style is fresh, disciplined, and issue-based, renewing UTM’s hope without mimicking its founder, the late Saulos Klaus Chilima (SKC).

He is his own man, complementing the legacy well. On the podium, he lays out his vision with substance, and his approval has been rising steadily.

Those who want to ignore him do so at their own peril. History has shown that leaders like DK can make a significant difference.

The economic genius might just prove to be the game-changer Malawi needs, or even pull off a bigger surprise like he did at the convention.
